DISCLAIMER: I did not read the entire thread, but generally addressing the original post

Personally, my idea of coolness and fun does not involve blacking out, not remembering what you did that night, then telling your friends all about it the next day with much pride and a hangover. Also, considering your age, I think you’ll find out sooner or later that high school parties where kids just binge because they never see alcohol anytime else just isn’t that cool.

Anyway, in my experience, getting drunk simply means that you’re stupidly disoriented for that period of time. On the contrary, not that I’m promoting it, but as an alternative, marijuana in strict moderation could be much better. It’s a much funner experience than getting drunk, IMHO, and you have to be real dumb to get addicted to it considering nothing in it is chemically addictive and vulnerable people just get mentally addicted to it.

However, if you ask others and yourself (as I did) why someone would want to drink/smoke, you’ll find that the most prominent reason is just boredom, and I personally found that there are much better and funner things one could spend their time on other than alcohol and drugs.

Um, you pretty much just stated yourself all the reasons not to.

Plus it’s just kind of stupid to be a freshman in high school and drink.
It’s kind of ridiculously funny and irritating, and just makes you seem more annoying.
In all honesty.

I can assure you that trying to attack someone for saying “lulz” on the interwebz is worse. This isn’t an insult, just the truth. You know you weren’t joking when you said this though, which means you’re too serious.

Please don’t listen to most of the people on here. There are pro’s and con’s to drinking, and you should just decided yourself. Just be aware of the consequences of drinking and PLEASE watch your drink.

Okay, just FYI the posts that say “I think freshmen who drink are annoying” do not affect my decision for two reasons:

1) you probably find freshmen annoying anyway, and you probably think they’re especially annoying when they talk about drinking to you [who wouldn’t?] but if a freshman doesn’t talk about it, how could you possibly know? and

2) it’s really judgmental and unjustified to think someone’s personality is annoying because they spend n amount of time drinking. It’s not like all people who drink have the same personality.

Oh, and a third reason: I will no longer be a freshman this summer.

Edit: you can substitute ‘annoying’ with ‘not cool’, ‘stupid’, etc

Okay, what I don’t get is why you’re asking for the cons to drinking when you’re going to do it anyway. Every reasonable, logical thing people tell you, you shoot down.

So go get drunk and stop pretending that we can change your mind.

it isn’t annoying if you’re a freshman–age has nothing to do with it. it’s annoying if you start to care only about drinking and brag about getting wasted constantly. not all drinkers have the same personality, but people who try to be cool by drinking do.

I’m not sure if anyone mentioned this already, but in at least NY, if a party with underage drinking gets busted (which can happen soo easily), whomever is the home-owner is faced with criminal charges. Even if it’s the classic situation of parents being out of town for the weekend - they’re still in trouble. So if you’re at a friends or are going to throw a party, etc, think of your friends parents and what can go on THEIR record.

@ post 91: I’ve only responded to like 1/10th of the posts–the really informative ones and the really ridiculous ones. =/ Yeah, I’ll probably still start drinking this summer (probably June 14th but kind of TBD) but I started the thread because of uncertainty.

“First of all, if any party you go to gets busted by the police, or if you get caught and have to take a Breathalyzer test, you could go to juvie.”

Well now that’s complete bull. If the police sent every–or any–teenagers to juvie just for getting drunk, the state would go bankrupt. Even drinking & driving normally won’t get you sent to jail, unless you get in an accident. Not that I’m endorsing drinking & driving–that’s really damn dumb, because you’re not only endangering yourself but lots of other people–but just plain old somebody’s basement with a couple of beers? The police will not give a crap, if they do bust you they’ll just send you home.

I am in no way a nerd or overachiever, but personally, I don’t see any reason to drink in the first place. Sure, life sucks sometimes, but drinking can’t really make you feel better in the long run. Plus, what’s the point in drinking? You have no personality so you need to be drunk in order to be amusing?

Obviously drinking is fun and can help you escape, but it also can lead to health problems, date rape (which seriously does happen way more than you think, as others have said), and addiction (or even just dependence). Also, if you end up buying your alcohol or paying people for it (although I’m sure you can get it easily from others), it’s a waste of money. It has a lot of calories and it’s just plain unhealthy.

While it may just be a personal account of drinking negatively affecting one’s life, it is more common than hearing someone say “I started drinking and now my life is great!” Those people are in the minority. Scuba and DagnyT, among others, have given great reasons why one shouldn’t drink.
