So I’ve been accepted to Amherst (and elsewhere), and as of now, I have no preference. I need some advice. Why Amherst? What specifically do you like about Amherst? What do you dislike? I’m trying to gather info right now.
Also, how’s the music at Amherst? Practice room availability?
Top-notch symphony orchestra and smaller ensembles. Auditions generally required but fairly inclusive. Ample practice rooms for all, including some in the dorms, some with Steinway pianos. Instrument lockers rental available for larger instrument storage. Students on financial aid have access to reduced cost (if not free) lessons (I believe). Almost every year, there is an optional opportunity to travel with the orchestra over winter break.
Just came back from a visit to Amherst with my D. I can echo busgal with regard to the Orchestra. Nothing will substitute for a visit at both, which we did. Reed totally turned my D off. A combination of the social feel (many students smoking, very alternative looking) and the “we’re going to work you to the bone” mentality. She doesn’t object to a rigorous curriculum, but Reed seems to be a bit one sided, while Amherst seemed reasonably more laid back and genuinely interested in developing a well-rounded individual (just my impression from the outside). We’re trying to decide if Amherst is the right fit at this moment. It is very diverse, which is a great plus but might also make connecting a bit more challenging since everyone is, well, so diverse.
Yes, the class is diverse. But diverse does not mean unkind, arrogant, etc. For the most part, we have found students to be inclusive, intelligent, engaging.
One big worry for new students is whether they will connect with their roommate. Here the school does a pretty good job. I would say, based on observing our student’s freshman dorm, match was 75% successful in finding compatible roomies. Many roommates choose to go in together on later years’ room draw.
Another key is to join clubs/activities that one genuinely enjoys. Plenty of kindred spirits, whether it’s athletics, the arts, science, business, religion, politics. Small school=ample opportunities to sample around and have an impact where one chooses to do so.
Last, faculty are accessible and made a huge difference in fending off freshman year homesickness. We chose a small school environment for this reason, and Amherst did not disappoint.
Thank you so much for the responses! I’ve already visited Amherst (through DIVOH), and I liked it. I probably won’t be able to visit Reed… I don’t like to make decisions. (though I am about 80% sure about Amherst).
