Hi I think that I might end up at High Point. I haven't visited it yet but have been accepted. The school looks gorgeous and it seems like a lot of fun. I also got into Penn State-UP which is HPUs only competition. I don't know which one to choose. Convince me for High Point!

High Point is an awesome school! I’ve visited 3 different times and have loved every bit of it. The campus is amazing, the academics are great and the professors from what I’ve heard are even better. I’m a business finance major and if all goes according to plan I’ll be transferring in as a junior this fall. I’ll be coming from New York!

High Point is a private school, tuition and fees are right in line if not less than other private schools in the south. Everything rises and falls on leadership and at High Point the leadership is top notch, if not some of the best in the nation.

Oh and I’m a Yankees fan too!

Congratulations on an excellent choices, yankee. You have a big decision to make because they are very different experiences. HPU is a smaller, warm, caring, closely-connected community where “everyone knows your name” to include professors and administrators (e.g., the President is highly visible and accessible). The mission, IMHO, is on target - it is people oriented, people first. At HPU, you matter, and they can do that because it is small enough. They talk the talk, walk the walk. Beyond that, the academics are solid and challenging; major courses of study are broad and exciting. My DD wants to be there and wants to be learning. Being so far away (we are from PA), it is comforting to know she is thriving and in good hands down there. But you MUST visit to see for yourself if it is a good fit for you; be sure they have the course of studies you are interested in; talk to the students and professors. Good luck!

Thanks and I’m just not sure about like job placement after college. Penn State is sooo well known and High Point is still up and coming. I feel like I would be happier at High Point but for a successful future Penn State is the way to go. I guess once I visit HPU I will know for sure. It’s so hard haha

Yankeegirl,

Not sure what it will take to convince you to make High Point University your choice.
What will you be your major at either college?
I actually know people that are very successful that have graduated from HPU; some have went to obtain graduate degrees and be very successful in their careers.
My sister is a physician and graduated from an Ivy League college. Some students whom graduated with her are working for a temporary agency making $10.00 an hour; while their are some students that went to work for Goldman Sachs and make six figures. I guess it is the way that you apply yourself before and after college.
College is just one part of the package when you present yourself in a interview with your future employer. My sister did not go directly to medical school after she graduated, but she worked in a lab for two years with rodents.
Your employer might want to know if you did any volunteer/non-pay work, if you were in any activities and if you are community service oriented.
You might be curious as to what I do for a living after receiving my degree from HPU. Well, I am in online sales for the last five years. I go around to thrift stores and sell on Ebay spending $100-$150 a week and turning it into $3000-$5000 a month, plus I work at the bank. No, it is not something that I thought that I would do when I graduated from HPU, but for the first ten years after I got my degree I got tired of the customer service jobs. I got tired of saying, “Yes ma’am and no sir.”
My mother an elementary teacher often talked me out of teaching because of the lack of manners kids and sometimes parents have for the profession of teaching. So, I went to the library and got a book and went around to a couple of thrift stores. Back in 2007 I bought a Pucci dress for $85 and sold it for $2654.44.
Yes, my family laughs at what I am doing with my college degree, but I like what I do and I am happy, plus it pays the bills.
I really cannot say to much bad about my experience at HPU because I knew in my heart that God loved me as much as those other kids even if their parents were wealthier than mine.
Hopefully, you will make the right decision for you, because college IS a big decision, but if you do not have a “successful future” (your words) it might not be the fault of the college.

hpualum hits a strong cord on many levels. I went to a private, esteemed, “name” college 30 years ago so that I could get a good job. It was the wrong reason. I ended up miserable and floundering. I left, went into the workforce, and eventually finished my degree part-time at a non-name school (and Masters degree thereafter). Believe me when I tell you that it was the harder road. Now, however, I enjoy success, (depending upon how you define it). I am not affluent, but I have health, family, a home, happiness and a job I love to go to every day.

From my interactions with people at work and in life, I would venture to say that 99.9% of the time, college “names” never even come into play. Very rare. What I learned from college and life experiences, is how much the importance of the “name” of the college pales by comparison to the kind of person you are. IMHO most people get their jobs either from networking (personal connections) or their own personality (interview), not by the college “name”.

Beyond that, HPU is gaining recognition and respect amongst the academic community in leaps and bounds. It is exciting to be a part of it.

Let us know how your visit goes and what you decide. It is good you are doing your homework. Something I never did. I just went for the name. Best wishes for success.

I really appreciate all your responses. I want to major in communication- journalism to become a sports journalist or gossip columnist haha. When I stepped on the PSU campus it was cold and big, something I didn’t want. I want a close knit school and HPU keeps sounding better and better everyday. I’m so anxious to visit it. As of right now I see myself at High Point, but once I visit it, I’m sure I’ll know 100% if its the school for me.

Plain and Simple… you must visit HPU before making a decision. I think most would bet that you will come away saying this is the place for me, best on what you say you are looking for. However, without going to see the campus and feel the atmosphere, you are cheating yourself. Hope you can do it.

Yankeesgirl,
Thank you for stating your major. As I stated on a previous thread it has been a while since I visited HPU. I know that they have a new School of Communication building. When you visit HPU or revisit Penn you should have a line of questions to ask the professors and career counselors.
There is no harm in asking questions because you do want to have the best fit for you.
- What percentage of graduates start immediately as a sport writer from your program?
- Do you suggest graduate school before starting in the profession?
- What internships have you placed your students? Are these internships local or out of state? Are they paid internships?
- Maybe you should ask the professor of that college as to why you should choose their school over the other?
Make sure that you bring IT at the interview five years from now. Have your photography skills sharpened. Tell the interviewer the late nights that you stayed up to watch the games, how you traveled to the different games, and show him/her the non-biased/neutral articles that you wrote for the newspaper. You seem to be very smart and I know that you will do well.

Thanks hpualumni. Those questions are really good to ask, I never thought about that stuff before. When I visit HPU I will definitely bring up those questions, and maybe I’ll email PSU or something. Thanks so much.

Im going to high point yayayayayayay :d

CONGRATS YANKEE!! Did you visit? I was just there this past week ~ hated to leave.

Thanks!!! I went yesterday and fell in love instantly! I can’t wait to go. The campus is gorgeous and everyone is so nice. I paid my deposit yesterday! I’m so exciteddddd!

Congratulations yankeesgirl! It’s easy to fall in love with the place. We just hope it maintains its luster once my son is there. Haven’t heard/seen any reason to think it won’t.

Yankeesgirl, Congrats on your decision. We were glad to here that you took the time to visit. Most will come away with the same impression that you did! We sure did. Seeing is believing!!! Best of luck to you! (now if only your Yankees can get their first win of the season in Boston then your week will be a perfect one!)

DD is in her fourth semester there and the luster remains, however it has shifted - it has moved from the outside in now that she has settled into her major, Graphic Design. Enthusiastically and proudly, she gave me classroom tours of the vibrant, interactive art studio and gallery, state-of-the-art communications department building (her minor) and the new business school, one was a more exciting learning environment than the next. When I was there, I could not get over the number of potential students and parents touring - WOW! Word is out!!!

thanks guyss! im so excited to go. its so pretttty :D

sooo i just found out that i got into loyola maryland todayyy! I don’t know what to do. I loveeee loyola too

yankeesgirl, remember to ask the questions posed by hpualum pertaining to your major to both HPU and Loyola. I know people at both schools and have heard good things about both. I don’t think you can go wrong with either choice. Good luck!

thankss but im going to loyola!!! hpu is gorgeous but i feel like loyola is just a better school and it fits me better
