We started a similar thread in the St. Joe's section. Our son is torn between St. Joe's, Marist and PC. He really liked his visits at all the schools, but feels most comfortable with St. Joe's or PC. PC is closer, which is an advantage, but he feels that if St. Joe's was as close to home, he would have chosen that school already.

If anyone has positive (or negative) experiences at PC or from visiting PC, any comments would be appreciated. It is down to crunch time and he really needs to make a decision soon!

I can’t comment on St. Joes, but we have visited PC and Marist. Marist we only visited once and liked, seemed like a great school and we have a friends son who goes there and loves it. We’ve visited PC several times (its been rising on my D’s list) and all visits have been great. Have talked with faculty, students, and adcoms and been impressed with all. Love the location – city of providence. We also know several people with students currently at PC or recently graduated – all have nothing but good things to say.

We visited PC last week (D is a Jr) and I have nothing negative to say. I lived in Providence 6 yr and it is a great town. The neighborhood right around PC not the greatest, but they have buses.

It looked to me that the students we saw there really liked being there. The ones who worked with the AO were courteous and helpful beyond belief. They walked us nearly all the way to buildings when pointing would have been fine.

We visited the bookstore and I looked at the books for the Western Civ course. I was impressed–lots of primary sources. They will be readng their a…es off in that class. The books for the honors lit & hist courses looked terrific, too. Primary sources, and demanding engagement with the material.

D was allowed to sit in on a class of that course. She sat in the back and did not like it that the kids around her acted like her hs classmates—doodling, texting, etc. But she noticed the ones down in the front were all taking notes and raising their hands with questions. She knows where she would be sitting!

That course is mandatory for all there, as you know. So I guess it is a safe guess the kids in the back were not the future history majors.

PC Alum here - I’ve been on these boards helping my jr daughter with her college search and thought I would take a peek at the PC board.

The descriptions that I’ve read here could have been describing PC back in my day. Things change but not that much. The description of kids being happy there was true then as it seems it is now.

PC is a great school. I was a very happy student there. The Civ program is tough but well worth it - so much of what I know came from that course. To this today I use what I learned - especially when traveling or reading. The political science department was great and some of the same professors are still there.

As a parent I wouldn’t hesitate to send my kids there. Good luck to your graduates - I am sure whatever choices they make will be positive ones.

Have been visiting colleges with my hs junior and thought Providence was a possible fit. Is there any truth to the rumor that freshman will be paying a premium on their tuition that upperclassmen will not have to pay?

I’m afraid it’s true - incoming freshmen will pay $5000 more than sophomores, juniors and seniors next year. Here’s the link to the explanation. It came as quite a shock to many people, especially because they didn’t broadcast it but left it for people to find out about on their own. :(
