Cooking Facilities

I understand that microwaves and the like are not officially allowed in the dorms (correct me if I'm wrong there), but given that I don't like using microwaves anyway, I was wondering:

Do the dorms (or buildings containing them) contain conventional cooking facilities ("conventional" would basically be a stove/hot plate and a conventional/convection oven)?

Are small refrigerators/freezers allowed in the dorm rooms?

Thanks in advance!

Yes and yes. Re: refrigerators, you'd have to get one on your own; we took my son to Target in Somerville and bought one there.

Cooking is a big part of MIT life in some dorms. The different dorms have different numbers of kitchens -- some dorms, like Random, EC, or MacGregor, have a kitchen per suite or floor, while others (Simmons and possibly Baker) have only one or two kitchens for the entire dorm.

If cooking is important to you, you'll want to check out the facilities at the different dorms when you make your housing decision.

And at least at MacGregor, where I lived (and cooked), the kitchens had microwaves as well. I think many of the dorms, even those with fewer cooking facilities per resident, have microwaves in common areas for general use.

Quite a few of the dorms have large, well-equipped kitchens, and they and the cooking that goes on in them are a major part of social life in many dorms. This is also true for some FSILGs - pika, for example, has a large kitchen and resident-cooked community dinners every night.

Microwaves are actually allowed in kitchen areas, just not in rooms. And cube fridges are allowed in rooms. Living groups with kitchens will have large communal fridges with freezers, which are fine as long as you label your food so that people don't mistakenly believe that your ice cream is "public".

Jessie, perhaps you should also put quotes around "mistakenly". ;)

HAAhahaa... yes definitely "" ...""

Mollie left out BC.
Burton Conner probably has the most home resembling kitchen shared by several people. EC is shared by the floor so it is pretty huge. Random have a number of good sized kitchens for it's ~100 residents. MacGregor has a small hallway kitchen every 6-8 people (very little counter space, but still functional and super convenient). New House has a pretty big kitchen per House (about 30 people , 6 houses total in new house). the cultural houses, which are more like floors might have one on their own). Next House , Baker, Simmons should all have a kitchen somewhere... but since they have in house dinning, and you are required to sign up for preferred dinning at those dorms, you probably won't cook too much.

We have a large fridge in our suite. I put all my grocery.. un-edible unless cooked food in the suite fridge (easiler to grab while cooking) and the fruits and juice and other good stuff in the fridge in my room. depends on how many people share your kitchen, the more people the more likely your ice cream will get eaten.

But anyways.. i have like a coffee maker. rice cooker, water filter pitcher, and fridge in my room... no one cares too much. my friends have put microwave in their room (in baker).
