if you just want to create airflow, you can just prop up the laptop with erasers or bottle caps or the like. as for good fans, look at antec (notebook cooler), vantec (lapcool 2 or 4), and zahlman. the last two i think work a little better since they blow air out as opposed to sucking it in, but the antec still works and it's a little cheaper.

Are you referring to when the laptop is on a lap or on a surface?

For a surface all you really need is one of those little lifts. Buy one or construct one using wood. For a lap, you'd be best to try before you buy so you get one you're comfortable with.

both, sometimes, say on a bed, they can get hot

laptops will always get hot on a bed, or any soft surface because the intake, which is on the bottom, gets blocked. you can buy a cooling pad/i or prop up the computer on, say, a hardcover book, to keep it from getting too hot and/or keep your lap from burning up. most cooling *fans aren't too comfortable on your lap.
