Hey I recently got accepted to both Cooper Union(school of art) and NYU's Scholar's Prgram in art as a studio arts major and I am being offered almost full tuition. I do not know what to do, i am afraid if I do not accpet Cooper Union, i will regret it for the rest of my life. However, if I accept it, and do not like it, I will have to transfer and lose my full tuition at NYU Scholar's Proram. I visited NYU today and everything about the University was pefect, I even already know the two professors and the advisor who runs the art program. They told me specifically that they loved my portfolio and made it clear they would do anything to get me to come. But when i got to see the studios, I felt like crap. The work in them was terrible, there was little space for students, including seniors, and the building just made me feel depressed and bad inside. I really am lost. I know i want to have access to a University and I want to have access to certain liberal arts classes like I would at NYU, and I want to travel and NYU has offered me that, But the work and the studios were just so terrible and i do not know if I would be happy. Somone please give me their thoughts. I am so lost and confused.

Help any advice is appreiated i am in a bind!

Wait are you getting a free ride at NYU? Because if so, that is truly something to celebrate...do you know stingy NYU is with aid?

Cooper Union is definetely a good deal, and a great school for art.

A full scholarship at NYU is something--so is being accepted at Cooper Union! Here's the advice my son received from an art college president and an artist when he was trying to decide about a liberal arts college and art college:they both said that if you know that what you want to do more than anything else is art, think about whether you want to spend time in classes required to get a BA--e.g., do you want to take another year of a foreign language or statistics for social science majors, or would you rather being taking art classes with other art students and focusing on what you love and what you see yourself doing.

It really helped my son make up his mind about applying for college--he decided on art schools only. Even though he really enjoys his history and anatomy classes in high school, he loves art more and decided he could still read good literature, etc. (and not have to take bio. 101).

A friend of mine who is putting her 5th child through college said that no matter what, early decision acceptance or having to make a choice between two schools later--most kids are second guessing themselves and generally, their gut tells them what's best.

I hope this helps. Either way, you've done well.

bump bump bump

You don't seem ready or willing to commit to a full arts school (as in going to CU). You say you're interested in liberal arts, and that's why I think you would be much better off at NYU.

it is not that i am not committed to art, I live art, but i just do not know enoguh about either program, i know both are exceptional but both are very different and I cannot quite read/hear my gut. So i need help or input from others. Obviously if I got into Cooper they see I am committed, I mean they do not give you a spot for no reason, but I feel like my problem is if I go I will be giving up so much from NYU, but if I do not, I will regret it. I am just scared and confused.

what do you care for NYU fullride when Cooper Union is fullride anyways?

COOPER UNION ALL THE WAY! it was almost a dream of mine to go to cooper union and my ap studio art teacher tried to encourage me too but COME ON! a school with a total student body of under 1000 means less than 250 acceptees. that is SOOOOOOO hard it is harder than HARVARD to get into.. you have to be very proud of yourself. i envy you so much you must be soooooo good

btw i did get into nyu also and im getting a really good financial aide offer too so they are not THAT stingy. dont worry about finance rite now since its not even an issue... come on.... COOPER UNION IS THE ONLY SCHOOL THAT IS FULL RIDE FOR ANYONE WHO GETS ACCEPTED>

Cooper Union is much more specialized, as opposed to NYU, which has a broader-based curriculum.

To reiterate what many have already said: it is your choice. I would not turn down the full-offer from NYU, as NYU is much more recognized (IMO) than CU.

I'd go to NYU. It sounds like that is what you really want to do. Cooper Union is a great school but definitely lacking in the overall college experience.

COME ON! NYU is not even that GREEEEEAT of an art school sure its good but if anybody knows about art school... not like some guy sweeping the street... then they would KNOW cooper union. it is SOOOOO too recognized in the field of art and architecture and such. 95% of the population at a highschool do not about it that much but thats cuz they were not in APArt.

"recognized" is a stupid thing to look for when going to school. im going to wellesley and not brown or cornell. im sure the guy sweeping the street has heard of harvard or princeton but has no idea wat wellesley is. but do i CARE what the guy sweeping the street thinks? people that MATTER, their thoughts MATTER. HIllary Clinton went to wellesley. madeline albright went to wellesley. do average joes know that? NO

think about the crappy nyu dorms and poor quality pastel or oil and ugly studio... dont u want more INSPIRATION than a crampy little space?

Thank you all for your input, Does anyone happen to know anything about NYU's Scholars program, because at this point, that factor on how good/bad it is, what you actually do as a Scholar in the program etc. is going to be the main factor which helps me decide between the two. In other words, if the Scholars program is incredible I think I will go to NYU, if the Scholars Prgram just has a nice name and is not that much different from a regualr NYu education than I think Cooper Union will be my choice. Anyone please who knows someone or is actually in the program that can tell me about in, in more detail than there is on NYU's Website. I am in the Steinhardt School of Education at NYU, so technically I would be a Steinhardt Scholar. So anyone feel free to share their knowledge.

bump bump bump

all i have to say, is that i would love to see your portfolio. you must be really talented.

"crappy nyu dorms"

Umm, NYU dorms are among the best and most spacious in the country. If anything, its Cooper Unions dorms that are crap.
