Cooper Union Upheaval (Inside Higher Ed)

What a mess. I’m not sure who is in the wrong or right here, but look at the list of trustees who resigned:

How realistic is it to try to make Cooper Union tuition-free again? Does anybody know if the school became less selective when it starting charging tuition, or is it too soon to tell?

They’ve only had one class enroll with a half-tuition scholarship - the class of 2018 (who started this fall). I think it’s too soon to tell whether they became less selective. But Wikipedia does say that it’s acceptance rate for 2014-2015 was 15%, whereas previously CU’s acceptance rate had been below 10%. That probably didn’t change the quality of the class much, though - any school that rejects over 90% of its applicants are probably rejecting lots of well-qualified students.

I think the trustees remaining are about to do an investigation into the management of the land under the Chrysler Building, which is how CU makes much of its money.

Thanks, @juillet.

I missed this New Yorker story that appeared in April. It provides some interesting (!) additional background:

Boy. I hope the non-renewal is not due to Dr Sulkowicz’s assessment. IMO the home issue cast doubt on the Dr’s abilities.
