cooper union

hi out there. My S went to national portfolio day yesterday- the cooper union rep spent mucho time with him, loved his work, and said that she would put his name on their database and would like to see him again next year (he's a jr.) Does anyone have an opinion about what that means- how important it is? his is a good student- not stellar- but would love to go to CU, but i don't want him to get his hopes up. any thoughts?

I could be wrong but it is good thing either way.
suppose same thing as you get faculty rec to do ED when you are senior
suppose you are in CA? and never met Cooper rep till yesterday?
I don’t know why NPD comes so late to rather important turf ( SF,LA)
My guess is large number of CA kids would go to local-sh school and those who want to come East, esp Cooper would fly in to its on-site openhouse and reviews, like most of my kid’s friends did in Nov or Dec.

here is what Cooper’s view book says

-Potential School of Art students who have received a preliminary review at NPD, which occur after The Cooper Union’s regular admission deadline (Jan 7), may be invited to apply after the regular admission deadline.
All reasonable effort is made by the School of Art Admissions Committee to review these applications in a fair and timely fashion.

which means
if your kid was a senior, chances are he’d have gotten this invitation!!
yet he could still apply as a junior if

-Candidates of exceptional merit may be considered for admission after three years of high school. Art applicants must have excellent high school records and exceptional ability.
A recommendation from the high school principal, at least one recommendation from a teacher and an interview will be required.

in this case, you are responsible to meet early graduation cedits/standards of your state.
If your kids meet all^^^^ I would ask Cooper if he can still apply and try hometest this year.
did you get name of the rep or the prof who reviewed your kid? name the name and ask if they’d let you apply now. Test packet won’t be send out another week or so. I think you got time still.
More likely he won’t get in first try being still junior, but next year, he will be golden.
It is a bit different story for my kid but being done it once, he is rather relaxed and looking forward to the “doing” side of the test as a senior.

thanks for that info… i don’t think he should pursue applying now- he just registered for the risd summer program, so we are hoping that his portfolio is even stronger by the fall, and yes i guess we should plan on taking a trip out to CU after that. i was just wondering if the words “I’ll put you in the database” is something they say to many, or if it was 'meaningful"- sounds like it possibly could be. again, not sure if his grades will stack up, but she wasn’t deterred by him saying he gets A’s and B’s. thanks for your feedback:)

That must be a GOOD sign!
My D didn’t have good experience with Cooper at NPD when she had her first review in junior year and we went to NPD on her senior year but got a mistake that Cooper didn’t show up for the one we went. Regret but nothing we can do …
Lucky enough, she got in last year and now is in her first college year.
Summer precollege program did help. She did SAIC three weeks one since RISD is too far away and 6 week is too long she think …
Good luck with your S’s Application next year!
