Cooper Union

Anyone know about this place? It doesn't appear in the rankings or anything, yet it has an acceptance rate of 13%. Also, with this low acceptance rate, according to collegeboard.com the SAT mid 50 is also very low for such an acceptance rate. What's going on with this? What is Cooper Union? Why don't more people on this site seem interested, I mean, it must be prestigious.

yeah, its in nyc...and its pretty prestigious here...but its a very focused environment, meaning its good for architecture, engineering and art, but thats about it, to my knowledge. its also maaaaaaaaad easy to get in ED.

So the easy ED acceptance rate is what lowers the average SATs I guess?

If I wanted to go there, would I get into medical school? I've considered being an engineering major somewhat. And I love NYC.

Cooper Union is amazinggggggg. Its free tuition for those who are accepted, but it is unbelievably selective. And uh no it is not easy to get accepted. Cooper Union is ivy level~

Alright you have a different point of view than the first reply. So, why is the SAT mid 50% so low.

And go to collegeboard.com and it says $31.5K tuition. I've heard of it being free though. Also, what happens to people applying to med school from there? What's the history of that.

As I know, Cooper Union is very hard to get into, and their engineering programs are excellent!

umm.. i'm really not sure about the med school situation..but im sure its tuition free...as for the ED thing i was talking about, what i meant was that it's considerably easier getting in early. Afterwards its real tough.

i'm not sure about engineering students, but those who apply for architecture or art have to complete a home test as part of their application. i think you have to do around 8 pieces, each according to/interpreting the prompts given. so, while one's SAT may be low, their talent needs to be spectacular to get in.

and yes, it is a very good school. and in a cool part of the city.

Cooper Union is an excellent school but offers only 3 majors, which is why it doesn't usually appear in the typical University or LAC listings. Its SAT scores may not be high, because like Juilliard and other art schools, admission is based on other criteria.

There is a portfolio requirement and a hometest. Because Cooper Union is in NYC, and because all admitted students receive full scholarship for tuition, the school is a huge draw for students and therefore very competitive.

Future architects, engineers and artists should check it out.

If you get accepted they give you full scholarship to pay your tuition.

Ok, Godfather--If you look closer at Collegeboard, under the tuition info it has "Note: Every student admitted receives full tuition scholarship, covering tuition only, for duration of enrollment." Also, its SAT scores arent very low. Its mid SAT is around a 1300 which is very good. You have to remember that the MID SAT includes EVERYONE, including the URMs, Athletes, and people with 4.2s who don't test well. Its math SATs are very high, because the school is so focused on Engineering. Also, you can only major in either engineering, architecture, or art. So make sure you're POSITIVE that is what you want to do before you decide to go. Anyways, it's a really good school.

Yeah, The Cooper Union is a highly selective school which offers free tuition to its students. The architecture home test is very difficult, which is why they give you up to one month to complete it. They don't expect good or great SAT scores really because they care more about your ability to conceptualize.

If the tuition is waived, how do they make money?

They own the land under the Chrysler building, and they get unusual tax breaks not offered to other non-profits.

About half of the student body is from in-state, so it's a little easier to get in if your from NY state.

The acceptance rate for the engineering school is around 20%, and it's abut 5% for art and architecture, so the engineering school is relatively easier, but you'll still need top SATs there. The SATs of the art school may be what brings the averages down a bit.

bump 83838383838

Cooper Union is a great great school - as far as going to med school - I think that if you are good enough to get into cooper union and survive the academics then you are probably good enough to study hard and do well on your mcats - the one thing I did hear from someone I know who did engineering at cooper and then went to med school was that he had a lower gpa than other students applying to med school - he never said it but I am guessing that at a school like cooper union there is not as much grade inflation as say, University of South Carolina. I am surprised to hear that it is easy to get into ED - that is good to know. Good luck!

The Architecture school, and especially the art school does not take SAT's into serious consideration, which contributes to lower SAT's for Cooper Union overall.

Cooper Union is a very strong school but, as others have said, it only offers only 3 majors, which is why it doesn't appear in the typical listings.

The admissions rate places it in highly competitive, up there with schools like Harvard and MIT. Its SAT scores are not "high" because for their art program, which is large, the SAT scores are significantly less important than the portfolio. Like most art schools, the SAT scores will thus be low because they aren't accepting you based on your SAT, but on your portfolio. The SAT scores of the art students will lower the overall SAT scores for the school as a whole.

The tuition itself is free. However, living in NYC isn't cheap. So add in the cost of books and apartment rental, and the costs can add up.
