Copeley Apartments...

Hi, I'm a transfer student and was wondering what is it like to live in Copeley? Should I try to get a room closer to the grounds?

It is very far away and you have to take a bus to get to central grounds. I would aim for Gooch/Dillard as that at least could be walkable sometimes, or an off grounds apartment if you’re going to live as far away as Copeley.

Yikes, an off campus apartment would be too costly for someone like me. What is near Copeley?

Law school/Darden, John Paul Jones Arena, the baseball field…Harris Teeter…lol. Yeah, I think I’d estimate that is possibly closer than Central Grounds, or at least very close!

Well at least I can get groceries…lol.

Copeley is more expensive than a lot of apartments off grounds, unless you have a housing stipend. UVA official Housing in general is way more expensive.

Do a lot of outside housing include utilities? I do qualify for AccessUVa.

Even with utilities the price is cheaper. I have a friend who was finding things in the $375/mo range last time I checked (I was shocked!). They’re just as far as Copeley (in the opposite direction) and they’re not the Grand Marc but you’re paying less. I also have grad student friends and one of them this year told me he was paying $325/mo for his apartment.

I’m paying $325 (+utilities) for my apartment on Rugby. Further down JPA might be a good bet for slightly cheaper apartments.

canuck01, do you guys do during the year to pay the rent?

*What, do you guys…(sorry for the mistake)

Our landlord (MSC) will accept multiple checks so long as the total adds up to the monthly rent, so we (each of the 4 roommates) submit a check worth 1/4 of the monthly rent.

I’m renting a huge master bedroom on JPA in a luxury apartment (I didn’t know when I responded to the posting – I was actually looking for the cheapest price possible lol) for 350 – utilities included.

Off-grounds housing that isn’t a residential college (like the IRC, Brown, special language housing, etc.) really isn’t worth it. You’re really paying for the swipe card convenience or whatever it is…

Is it to late to try to get into a residential college?

there might be open rooms at irc or hereford but brown is particular about not letting anyone in who didn’t make the application deadline (or has been in past years).
