I transferred between semesters of Junior year and as a result hated school enough for my grades to be a lot of b's... also you know the whole parents divorce deal going on my freshman-now deal. There's just a lot of emotional stuff that my guidance counselor is willing to explain in my recommendation.

gpa UW: 3.6 (mmm... near 4.0 for senior year)
gpa W: 4.4
sat: 2090
sat 2: bio m- 770, ush- 750, math 2- retaking w/ 750 goal
act: 32 ---> trying for 33/34
class rank: eh... 2 diff. schools. Rank top 5% estimate. It's unofficial.

-Very rigorous schedule
-10 AP's sophomore and junior year--> going for 7 tests this year. 4's and 5's on all tests. National AP Scholar.
-Dual enrollment- 3 classes at university
-Accepted to a math and science magnet school upon moving. 60-70 per grade.
-I don't know if this matters but my guidance counselor was going to hand me my diploma in January but I said I'd stick out the rest of the year even though I hate it here.

Senior year:
At university: Philosophy, Western Literature, Western History, next semester 3 more classes
At math and science center: AP Physics C, AP Calc BC, Organic Chemistry--> Biochemistry, Evolution of Scientific Thought--> Bio-ethics

EC's: Lots and lots of music. A ton. Involved in many different concert bands throughout the community and state. Section leader, solo clarinet at the university... you know the deal. It's what I'm highlighting in my app. because I'd like to pursue a music major/minor.

NHS, Community service around town, Volunteering at different hospitals
Tutor for children and Mentor for Girls program
Science Olympiad since Freshman year, Science Bowl
Tennis and Cross Country and Track, though it was JV
Musical Pit
There aren't too many clubs where I'm from... as in rural Midwest.

Again, EC's were effected by randomly just leaving in the middle of the year.

You may or may not get a fairly good idea of your chances when EA decisions come out (and you can probably read through them and figure out how much weight the essays had :P). Until then, it might be a little silly to chance you because no-one knows whether or not Chicago is looking for the same things it was in the past years.

I’m just wondering if it’s worth applying if i have a 1910 SAT…(1930 superscored) I’ve gone through many hardships, had good GPA, decent ECs (but not amazing), and a ESL student who moved to the states in 8th grade…seems like U of Chicago might be a high reach for me?

below is my stats copy pasted from USC thread (my #1 school, but chicago is also great)

if my chance is too slight for chicago then i guess i just wouldnt bother even giving it a try…oh well. any opinion appreciated.

and sorry im interrupting the thread Shizzle I honestly think you have a good shot, at least a better one than I do. I understand how it feels to transfer schools and all that…Ive gone though enough of that. ive attended 5 different school in thre past 5years…on 2different continents and in 4different cities. and we have very similar experiences…divorced and remarried parents for me in 8-9grade as well. i guess it’s just a matter of how you present it to the admission team. But still, you stats look great and wish you the best of luck =)

“It’s what I’m highlighting in my app. because I’d like to pursue a music major/minor.”
A word of caution here. Unless things have changed in the last 4 years, Chicago does NOT offer a BM-Bachelor of Music Performance degree. It’s music program is academically based, and is intended for those who want a degree in Music History or Composition, and is not designed for those who wish to be able to perform professionally. It also does NOT offer private music lessons on campus, unlike colleges with conservatory or schools of music. It IS a great college for academically committed students such as yourself who want an intense, graduate school level experience as an undergraduate , and want to continue to be able to perform musically with other students through various venues on campus and off.

One does not have to send both ACT and SAT to Chicago. If the score on one is substantially better than another, go with it. S1 only sent (and only took) the ACT.

Shizzle, sure you have a chance, but what difference does it make if I say it’s 1 in 5 or 1 in 4? My son who got in EA had an 88 UW GPA if you took away his orchestra grades. He was in the top 6% of his class, his SAT1 was slightly higher, his SAT2s were slightly lower. He had fewer APs (but did get 5s on all the one’s he’d taken) and no university level classes. He had a lot of music, a couple of interesting activities he wrote about, just a couple of school ECs. He wrote great essays, and had great recommendations, but I never would have predicted that he’d be accepted early. I think it’s pretty clear though it’s still not all about grades and scores at Chicago.

GPA UW: 3.939
GPA W: 4.333
SAT: Not the best; didn’t send it in.
SAT II: Bio M: 690
ACT: 30 (twice); Breakdown 1: E: 35, R: 27, M: 28, S: 30; Breakdown 2: E: 33, R:32, M:28, S:28
Class Rank: 3/364
School type: Public.
Junior year: Full IB Course Load. Tested out of SL History: got a 5, with a 7 on my internal assessment.
Senior year: Full IB Course Load, plus an extra test.
EC’s/Awards/Etc.: Varsity Volleyball Captain, volleyball awards (most inspirational, defensive player of the year, will-to-win), Science Olympiad (expected regional team member), Scholar Bowl, NHS, Tutor (history), Academic Letter, Honor Rolls, Theater, Club Volleyball (went to nationals twice, placed in the top half), Visual Art awards, Renaissance Committee, Recycling Club, and I’m going on a medical mission trip to the Philippines next month to teach children how to brush their teeth and distribute medicine.
Sex/Ethnicity: Female; Asian.

SAT: 2300 (800 Math, 790 CR, 710 Writing)
SAT II: 800 Math II, 780 Physics, 770 Chemistry
Demos: White Male.

Awards: ASCAP Mourton Gould Award Finalist (National Music Composition award)
Invited to take the AIME (5 times) and USAMO (3 times)
School award for the top mathematician.
Head of House Music.
House Student Academic Advisor.

EC’s: Tutor Math and Music to kids in under-served school districts.
Music Composition (Wrote a 20 minute Ballet for a commission, now working on a mass)
Math Olympiad Training (I want to get that MOP monkey off of my back)
Rowing - Varsity and Intramural Coxswain for 3 years (grew too big this year), awarded “racing socks” (equivalent of Varsity letter)

sigh decisions coming up and I can’t help thinking about CC threads. It’s hard to tell what Chicago wants since the admissions seems different.

I actually improved my SAT to a 2170, but that’s only because of the writing section. Will this make a difference?
