i do videos as my hobby. i did one video on my school recently, and i was thinking of submitting it as supplementary material. not planning to major in anything to do with fine arts or visual arts.
the thing is, my video contained soundtracks that i think are copyrighted (i plucked them off some PC games). i’ve never broadcasted the video in public, sold it, or do anything with it commercially other than viewing it at home myself. but am i infringing copyrights if i send the video off to the universities?

Mmmm. I think the key here is "for commercial gain." You might want to ask this in the Law forum--ConcernedDad and Greybeard, to name two, might have good takes on this. But I think you're safe and I'd also bet $20 that the admissions officer wouldn't recognize an intellectual property issue. Your cover letter might want to make clear that this is "for your personal enjoyment only" project.

Interesting question. I did a senior project (a mini-documentary on music downloading) and it had copyrighted music in it. I was planning to submit it to SCAD as my portfolio and was also worried about the copyrights as it had clips of video games, websites, commercials, etc in it besides copyrighted music.

I think you'd be safer if you included that it was for personal use only.
