Core Curriculum at Emory?

Is there one? If so, what are they? Are all undergrads REQUIRED to take calculus or some form of college math?

The link takes you to the general education requirements. Everyone has to take classes in the different areas but, since they are so broad, it's not really that much of a bother. you do not have to take calc but you do have to take some type of math class. For instance, you can take algebra, calc, stat, or some computer science class. you only have to take one though.

Yes, Emory students are required to take 1 semester of higher level math. This requirement is satisfied by calculus. I haven't heard of a student struggling to complete this GER.

We have General Education Requirements (GERs). Basically, every student is required to take one class from a list in different categories (physical science, math, american history, etc.). Students may get out of many of the GERs. For example, I have a freshman friend who has already fulfilled all of his GERs (due in part to AP credit). The only class all Emory students have to take is PE 101 (which you can take a waiver exam for once you get here). I would check out the Emory website for more information.

For quick confirmation, the GER claims that we need to meet its requirement by the time of graduation, right? So I can take my math class during my sophomore year and not take any my freshman year?

yes you're correct. i haven't taken a math yet and probably wont until junior year. they don't have to be taken at any particular time

Is there a requirement for a foreign language? I’m planning on majoring in biology at Emory, but I’m trying to figure out if I should take the AP class and test for a foreign language…

what is the waiver exam for PE? is that the swimming thing? how does the swimming exam work?

Even if you get AP credit for a foreign language you still have to take 2 semesters of a foreign language I think. The AP credit will more-so affect the placement.

No, if you get AP credit, you only have to take one more foreign language class, but it has to be the same language and at a higher level. For example, if you get French AP credit, you have to start with FREN 203 or 310 for the AP credit to count for the GER.

emory83, it’s not a swim test, it’s a test for PE101. I recommend you just try to take the exemption exam. It’s about drugs and stuff

so there is no swimming test at all for PE placement?

If one has AP credit, they might as well do another language. Most people will just claim that they don’t have time because “I am pre-X”, but in reality they do. They just don’t want to take classes outside of their track. Kind of stupid and should be anti to the reason they came here.
