core curriculum in engineering

Son will be studying biomedical engineering at Clemson and we are wondering how restrictive the core curriculum is in the engineering department. Some schools are very restrictive in what courses engineering majors can take outside of engineering. Son is hoping to finally get to take courses that are of interest to him while in college, whether they count toward his major or not. If they count as core curriculum, even better. Those of you who are engineering majors, have you been able to take any classes outside of engineering just because you were interested in them, like film or history or astronomy?

we have a general education curriculum for engineering majors. We have to take 5 classes for general education, one literature class, one non-literature class, 2 social sciences classes in 2 different fields (for example, im doing history and political science) and 1 class selected from a list of classes. In addition, you must meet a “cross-cultural awareness” and “science and technology in society” requirement. (Most people choose a class that fulfills 2 requirements at once, for example a social science and a cross-cultural class so that they only take 5 gen ed classes) Here are the general education requirements for engineering.

[Clemson University : College of Engineering & Science : Engineering Humanities & Social Sciences Policy: 2005-06 & Later](http://www.clemson.edu/ces/students/hSS_policy05-06.html)

I’m not aware of film classes at Clemson (I could be wrong though), but I do know that you can take history classes for your social science requirement. I don’t think you can take astronomy to meet any requirements since it is a science class.

It also helps if you have AP Credit from high school that satisfy any general education requirements. If you don’t get AP credit, it will be hard to get a minor without taking a ridiculous course load. With AP credits, you will have more breathing room to take whatever you want to.

The engineering curriculum chart can be seen here: Records and Registration | Clemson University, South Carolina;

Most people take 15-18 credits per semester. If you take over 19 credits, you are insane haha

If this is confusing, please feel free to ask and I can maybe clarify
