Core Curriculum - Math Course

Hi! I will be a Liberal Arts freshman in the fall, and I am wondering if there is a benefit to taking the AP Calculus AB exam over the Math I SAT Subject Test in regards to credits received. I took a course equivalent to Calculus AB, but I don't think I'm prepared enough to do well on the AP exam. Since either test would give me enough math credits to fulfill the core requirements, would there be any downside to taking the SAT Subject Test (which tests precalculus, something I am confident in) instead of the AP one? My main concern is that perhaps some natural science courses (which are also part of the core requirements) may require calculus as a prerequisite. I'm hoping that someone can offer some insight! Thanks in advance.

Okay, I will confess to not being an expert in this. So you are trying to test out of your math requirement? I know a high AP score will let you do that, but I didn’t know a high SAT II would help. Any dual credit option for you?

For math placement, UT uses ALEKS. Would that come into play if you need Calc as a prerequisite?

Yes, I am trying to test out of my math requirement. Apparently, either M 408C/K (credit given for doing well on the AP test) or M 305G (credit for doing well on the SAT Subject Test) can be used to fulfill the requirement.

That is a good point. I suppose that if I take the credit for precalculus, but need calculus as a prerequisite, I can take ALEKS, which will show that I do have a basic understanding of calculus.

Thank you for your help and suggestion! I had not thought of ALEKS.
