Hi,
I heard that Rice requires all students to take courses in three different subject areas (I forgot which ones), but I was wondering if some one could elaborate more on the requirements-

are there a specific number of courses they require Rice students to take?
what kinds of classes can you take for each of the subject areas?

This question has been answered a countless number of times on this board. However, I will repeat the answer.

Rice has three distribution areas, as follows.

Group I- Humanities/Foreign Languages- 12 credits required (each class is usually 3-4 credits)
Group II- Social Sciences- 12 credits required (each class is usually 3 credits)
Group III- Sciences/Mathematics/Engineering- 12 credits required (each class is usually 3-4 credits)

Often times, a 4 or 5 on the AP exam can be used to satisfy the requirements. Check out Rice’s AP credit policy on Rice’s Office of the Registrar website (just do a google search).

In my opinion, Rice’s “core curriculum” is not a core curriculum at all. It is very loose and easy to fulfill requirements.

Thanks! Sorry, I didn’t realize other people had asked the same thing before!
