Core curriculum

can you tell me what bates’ core curriculum is?? i can’t seem to find it on the website

i don’t even need the specifics, but basically is there a lot of requirements or not?? or if somebody has a link to the details please c/p

thanks

As of now Bates does not require you to take specific classes, but rather take classes in certain areas. You are required to take 3 natural science classes (including one lab), 3 social science classes, 5 humanities classes, and a quantitative class.
The current requirements can be seen here: <a href="http://abacus.bates.edu/catalog/?s=112&a=renderStatic&c=academic%5B/url%5D">http://abacus.bates.edu/catalog/?s=112&a=renderStatic&c=academic</a></p>

However, these requirements may change for the class of 2010 or 2011. They are proposing a new idea where students take two concentrations of four courses each. I can't remember much about this though.

thank you!!

that seems like a lot of requirements...does it feel like too much or are most people not bothered by it?

I don't really feel like it is a lot. I know I definetely would fulfill more than enough social science classes because that's the area in where I am most interested and humanities shouldn't be too bad either. Probably the hardest for me will be the lab requirement because I'm not big into lab work. However, there are many classes that are cross-listed in different departments so many times one class will fulfill multiple requirements. Also, I know that my roommate's lab science also fulfilled her quantitative requirement. So although it seems like you will have to take 12 classes for gen eds, it probably won't be that many. I know its defintely not as bad as other places where you are required to take English, Math or a foreign language, but its not as free as places that have virtually no gen eds.
