Core Curriculum

http://www.bu.edu/core/

I’ve just discovered that BU incorporates this program into its general electives requirement, and this, among a few other things, has cemented my decision.

However, I was accepted into BU’s COM department. Will I have any trouble getting into Core? (I haven’t replied to any acceptances yet, but I think I’ll send in my tuition deposit tonight.) Did registration fill up by now? Am I too late???

Also, what do current/prospective/soon-to-be students think or know about this program? How is the academic difficulty - papers, exams?

Hi, my son decided to apply to BU specifically because of the Core Curriculum option. Once accepted, he chose BU (over Vassar and other very competitive LACs) because he is so jazzed about it, as well as getting a very nice scholarship and being accepted to the Honors program.

I don't know if COM kids can take Core classes. I suggest you email your questions to Zachary Bos at zakbos@bu.edu. He's the administrative coordinator (and Core program graduate) over at the Core program, he's a wealth of knowledge about everything Core!

Good luck!

The Core Curriculum is only for CAS students.

I don't plan on doing the core, but at a recent reception, I met Prof. Christopher Ricks, who is a humanaties teacher in the core.
He was the nicest guy (funny, too) and he wrote a book on Bob Dylan. After the reception, he was talking with everyone and taking addresses of Dylan fans. I gave him my address, and I had a signed copy of his book sitting in my mailbox within a week!

I called the CAS admissions and they said almost all students can take it. Sign up in June.

Totally awesome. Is he the one who got Dylan to play last year? Here's the book: http://www.amazon.com/Dylans-Visions-Sin-Christopher-Ricks/dp/0060599235

I know Joan Baez briefly attended BU. Think she'll play too? Think Dylan will come again?!?!?!?!?!?? I've been listening to Dylan seriously for approximately a year, following each album chronologically (I've just reached Blonde on Blonde - I know I'm slow) since I saw Scorsese's documentary last May. Is BU like THE school for Bob Dylan fans? Because this is totally cool how everything is coming around in a circle for me and Dylan; it's all being brought back home.

jjsmom I chose Boston University mainly because of the Honors Program and the Core Curriculum. :)

Dylan did play Agganis last year, if that helps.

I'm sort of confused about the Core. Is it a special program to bypass the liberal arts requirements? Do you have to join it? And most importantly what makes it better/wanted? Anyone on CC actually went through it? I’m in School of Management by the way…

Core is described here. It's an option in CAS, not a requirement. It's similar to core programs at other universities - most of which do much more trumpeting of their core program than BU does (of course).

The Core website says that it is an option for CAS students. I have never heard of people outside of CAS taking Core.
