<p>You guys are starting to see the value of a well-rounded liberal arts education. Just think, by the time you graduate from Swarthmore, you'll probably be able to tread water for 15 minutes. Who knows, that might come in more handy some day than having disected and analyzed Plato!</p>

<p>Snopes mentions Harvard and Swarthmore in this link (stories are false). I'd heard the Harvard one when doing a post-doc sabbatical there in '81. Interesting story about Mortimer Adler being denied a degree for 60 years at Columbia because he couldn't swim (true)</p>

<p>I grew up on a bayou in Louisiana, couldn't imagine folks not knowing how to swim until I was in the Army and later when I did my doctoral work in Colorado.</p>
