Core curriculum

Just to clarify an earlier post, a biology major must take either 6 credit hours of foreign language or a computer language class? Some schools requirements are satisfied with 3 or 4 years of one language in high school, at least for a bachelor of science degree.

I hope I’m understanding your post…

Depending on the foreign language…IF you’ve taken 3-4 years of a foreign language, you can take a CLEP exam and get credits to satisfy the FL requirement.

or…

Depending on the foreign language… you can take the FL placement test, and if you score high enough, then you can take a 200 or 300 level FL class and then be given all the credit for the lower classes.

or…

Depending on the foreign language… you can take the 103 level of the class, complete it, and fulfill both FL credits.

Maybe others know some other options.

Thanks! My DD has a hearing loss and the listening/speaking is difficult. She’s debating taking a 5th year of German senior year, but the sooner she’s done with it, the better!

Juniebug, you are correct in the requirements for a foreign/computer language. The ways posted by m2ck are the easiest that I know of. Some majors require a basic computer skills class (CS 102) that you can take and counts as 3 credits of a computer language. If you test out of CS 102, you do not earn any credit, you just satisfy a requirement for your major if it was a requirement/prerequisite.

SEA_Tide…

Do the CLEP tests have listening portions that a hearing impaired person wouldn’t be able to do?

I see on the page about CLEP and German that any score above 50 would satisfy the FL requirement.

Junie…does your D have a total hearing loss? Or, can she hear if the sound comes thru earphones?

There is a listening component on the CLEP exam. I don’t know the point structure for the exams however. The listening portions have really high volume settings if that helps.

The point structures are on page 15 of the Undergrad Catalog 2008-2010

Thanks everyone! Hearing loss is mild/moderate depending on the frequency. Foreign lang won’t be a deal breaker, I’m just trying to get familiar with the schools we’ll be visiting in March. Can’t wait to see Alabama!

We hope you enjoy your visit!

What state are you coming from?

Be sure to book your campus tour soon. They book up FAST!!! You can always cancel, but try to book ASAP.

We live in the suburbs of Philadelphia, but I’m from Virginia and think DD will enjoy the friendliness in the south. She is a bit shy. We met a rep at a college fair who could not have been nicer and got DD thinking seriously about Alabama. I did book a tour since we may not be the only ones wanting to take advantage of spring break!

:)

Glad to hear that you’ve already booked a campus tour.

Yes, the kids are friendly.

I see that she wants to major in bio. does she have a health career in mind?

Yeah, as best a 16 year old can know what what she wants! Biology has always been her favorite subject and being a doctor is all she’s ever imagined for herself. I look at college as an opportunity to explore lots of things and hope she’ll keep an open mind. The new science buildings should impress her! By the way, as nice a private room in honors housing sounds, would it be easier to make friends in a conventional dorm?

It really depends on the person on how the type of dorm affects making friends. It is generally easier to make friends in a conventional dorm, but friends can be made in super suite dorms too. I really like the honors housing as it fits my personality better, IMHO. When I was researching colleges, UA’s honors dorms were a major selling point.

Even though honors dorms have private rooms, they’re in 4 bedroom suites, so she’d have 3 suitemates…And each suite has a livingroom as a common area…
