@whatiscore Yep! In fact, it’s encouraged to spend a semester abroad sophomore year.
LSP is a clever way for NYU to still cash in on students it didn’t want to admit. Honestly LSP is kind of a rip-off. You pay NYU tuition for un-tenured professors, less academic freedom, and forced study abroad (so they can afford to keep their study abroad locations operating). Do some deep research into LSP before you accept – it is very controversial in the NYU community, and the lack of transparency on the program is frightening.
@deller123 great, now I’m sacred again lol
@ayylmao1 I know the program is becoming a lot more legit and better respected, however, it’s not the same as being in CAS by any means. Take a look at this faculty list and note that almost half of the faculty for LSP is adjunct: http://www.liberalstudies.nyu.edu/page/faculty
@deller123 Studying abroad isn’t mandatory though. The required curriculum doesn’t seem that bad when I’m still trying to get an idea of what I want to do, but it definitely wouldn’t be ideal for people who already know what they want to do and can’t take the courses they need. The faculty at LSP obviously aren’t as well known/prestigious than the one at CAS, but I think like at every school, there will be an amount of good and bad professors, and I will try to use ratemyprofs so I get the well rated teachers, haha. I think I made up my mind after spending time with a junior (now at CAS) and I feel a lot more ready.
And from your post history, you’ve just been accepted to Stern in December, maybe you aren’t as informed as I thought you were, lol
I’m totally aware of the “LSP isn’t a real part of NYU” sentiment and it worries me how we can be treated in comparison to the other colleges. Any knowledge on this @seeniebeenie ?
But I have to pay the same amount in Purdue (my other option) as I have to do at NYU and I’d much rather be in a city campus with much more opportunity in the general field I am somewhat interested in (IR? Pre-law? who knows) I also made my indecision on my future career path very clear in my supplement, wonder if I would have gotten into my first choice, CAS, if I had knew what I wanted to do.
The sophomore abroad options aren’t very good either, wow. Only Florence and DC. I think I’ll just wait till Junior year.
We aren’t treated any differently, to be honest; we’re a real part of NYU. Yes, we do have a lot of adjunct faculty, but a lot of them are our best/most loved professors. The program has definitely grown from when my uncle was in it in the '80s to now when I’m in it. I haven’t come across the stigma against LS outside of CC.
@ayylmao1 You can study abroad in other locations sophomore year. Florence and DC are the only ones that you’re guaranteed into and don’t have to apply to take Cultural Foundations III and Social Foundations III in the same semester, so LS advertises those. If you want to study elsewhere during sophomore year, you have to apply to that location and petition LS to be allowed to take CFIII and SFIII in the same semester because the other sites don’t offer those courses.
@seeniebeenie Hi, are you saying that if I apply directly to LSP Florence freshman year abroad, I will have a better chance of getting admitted? For example, is LSP London or Paris harder to get into than LSP Florence? Thanks
@marchingahead No, I’m talking about sophomore year study abroad. There is no data on whether it’s easier to get into one freshman location over another. For study abroad after you’ve been accepted into NYU, you have to apply for the location and term you want, and Florence and DC are the sophomore study away locations LS students are guaranteed into.
@seeniebeenie I see, thanks loads!
