OP- I came into UChicago a lot like you, only in the opposite direction. I’m a polisci major, and was (and still am) very certain of my major. No doubt whatsoever, so I was a little annoyed at the fact that I have to take bio/physci/math courses. I’m nearly 2/3 through my first year (wow!) and I’ve come to have an appreciation for the core- I took number theory last quarter, and I’m taking Metabolism & Exercise (bio physiology) this quarter. I loved it enough that I’m hoping to audit the major’s physio course in the spring, and I enjoy being able to view the world from a different perspective; being able to describe Rousseau in terms of functions is kind of cool. I took sciences in high school, too, so I have no idea why this is different, but it is. I am now a huge fan of the Core. :)

It’s kind of like a scene in the movie “Legends of the Fall” - when the rancher says he wants to educate the little “halfbreed” who’s father works on the ranch, the girl’s mom asks what the use is, since she’ll never be able to do anything with it. He replies that it will allow the girl to live a fuller and richer life. For me, the same applies here - having an appreciation for the incredible details that go into a single muscle twitch probably won’t help me when I’m working on Capitol Hill, but it’s given me a different perspective on life.

Sorry for such the long post, but you should come here. :)
