Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship

SAT 2340, SAT 2s all 800s. 4.7 + WGPA, 4.0 UWGPA. ton of extra curriculars and research. Seimens regional semifinalist and ISEF finalist. Fantastic Recs.
Chemical engineering major.
Agree with @Belle35 its very tough to gauge what the committee was looking for as I note that all those who did not get the CV also have similar stats, maybe even better…we are extremely humbled.

36 ACT, 2350 SAT, 4 SAT2’s all 800, 9 AP classes–5’s, 4.0 GPA, Peabody

But I hesitate to post these (for D) because those who did not receive the CV had very similar stats. Only the committees know why they decided as they did…

@ranni9933, D applied ED2–which I guess is anecdotal evidence that Vanderbilt doesn’t just award scholarships to increase yield. I forgot about the NMF–thanks for that piece of good news. Best of luck to your S as well.

same to you @huehuehue32!

Congrats to all those awarded. Are these full rides ?

No award to my S either.

NMF, AP Scholar with Distinction, Varsity Tennis, 34 ACT (35/35/34/32/8), 2220 SAT (800M/750CR/670W), Class Rank #2 in Class of 550 at competitive state school. Rejected for scholarships at Emory, WashU, Vanderbilt, USC (maybe still NMF @ USC but no word yet). Much easier for athletes to get scholarships. My S knows two others at his school with 36’s and 800’s on everything that were rejected to Stanford and Harvard but one football player from S school got into Stanford with $.

@YrToGo, no the Cornelius Vanderbilt scholarship is a full tuition scholarship for 4 years (8 semesters) plus a one-time stipend of $5000 to be used for either study abroad or research.

Did anyone receive the CV Scholarship that applied ED1 or ED2?

ranni993 above’s daughter was ED2.

Rejected for the scholarship (but accepted to Vanderbilt via MOSAIC), 34 ACT, rank 1 in class, decent extracurriculars, not really any comm service, geographic diversity.

Well, I wasn’t expecting it, but now I guess I just have to wait for admissions decisions and fin aid offers from a bunch of schools.

Congratulations to the CV winners. I got the Chancellors Scholarship earlier but I am shaking my head looking at the stats of some of the people who didn’t get CV. To the CV winners, don’t forget that if you are NMF you get EXTRA $2k/year too.

<a href=“Guest Post: Scholarship Update | The Vandy Admissions Blog | Vanderbilt University”>http://admissions.vanderbilt.edu/vandybloggers/2014/03/guest-post-scholarship-update/</a>
Good afternoon,

I just wanted to provide a brief update regarding the selection process for the Cornelius Vanderbilt and Chancellor’s Scholarship awards. As of this afternoon we have notified recipients of the Cornelius Vanderbilt and Chancellor’s Scholarship awards by both e-mail and letter. Applicants who were not selected for either program will only receive an e-mail notification. A total of 24 Chancellor’s Scholarship and 132 Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship offers have been made. Please note that decisions regarding merit scholarship applicants who have applied to the Blair School of Music are still being finalized. Recipients will be notified in the next couple of weeks.

Competition for our merit scholarship programs continues to be intense. Awards in one of our three signature programs (Cornelius Vanderbilt, Chancellor’s and Ingram) are being made to less than 1% of our applicants for admission. Staff and faculty from the Vanderbilt community have spent countless hours reading and discussing scholarship applications and making difficult decisions regarding award recipients.

We continue to be humbled by the overwhelming response to our signature merit programs and we are amazed at the quality of the applicant pools. Over 4,600 students applied for the Cornelius Vanderbilt program and over 850 applied for the Chancellor’s Scholarship program. This is in addition to the over 840 students who applied for the Ingram Scholarship program.

Thank you for your interest in Vanderbilt! Should you have any questions, feel free to e-mail our office.

Sincerely,

Brent Tener

Director of Undergraduate Scholarships

Our son was accepted ED1 and applied for the CV Scholarship. He did not receive an email today. What does this mean?

I would have him send a cogent email to his adcom, stating he had not received a response yet to his CV application. Copy it to the main admissions office as well, as probably anyone can check a list and send him an answer. These things happen. College X “lost track of” our son’s merit application, and didn’t even put it in committee, although it took weeks for them to actually admit this. He also had to write to ask for a resolution/response. They even had an administrative officer review his application later. College Y invited him to a semifinalist event but never sent the email or called him? So he missed out on the particulars which included a new essay till post deadline when they called him to see why he hadn’t complied or responded.

I do not believe rani9933’s S was ED2 – I believe he was a Mosaic acceptance and is still waiting to hear from other schools. Not sure whether there are any ED scholarship recipients who have posted yet. Congrats to all who made it – wow!

My D was accepted ED2 and received the CV scholarship.

DS was awarded the CV scholarship. He applied RD. I read the other posts of wonderful and deserving students with great stats but were turned down for the scholarship; I am just grateful and humbled beyond belief.
For those who asked for CV recipient’s stats… DS had 36 ACT, all A’s, took 4 AP’s and scored 5’s, two independent research, summer intern with stipend, and involved in leadership and volunteered throughout high school.

2013:
CV applicants: 4500 ; awards: 130 ( not including awards from Blair)
Chancellor’s applicants: 900; awards : 53

2014:
CV applicants: 4600; awards 132 ( not including Blair)
Chancellor’s applicants: 850; awards: 24 ( I am one of them :-)

Still can’t believe how lucky I am.

@yetanotherid, Wow, I didn’t realize the odds are so low. Yes, we are lucky.

I wonder why Chancellor’s are reduced in number this year. Haven’t heard the reasoning behind this. Perhaps there is a declining distinction between the students in CVs and Chancellor’s anymore re geographic, racial, cultural, political diversity. The Vandy student body is very diverse overall, although like at most top schools there is a significant portion of full-pay families. Maybe we will hear a few words on this topic but it is an overall decline in merit offers. I can only assume that they put tremendous financial resources in need based financial aid. Since all these selections are need blind selections, keep in mind that some merit winners will still be paying for room and board out of pocket and some will be getting aide over and above tuition. It is easy to argue that the fairest thing is to preserve some merit program while focusing mainly on subsidizing those with demonstrated need. Vanderbilt has done a magnificent job with financial need aid. What could be better? Perhaps one day they could aspire to programs like you find only at the top Ivies that have a cap on what they charge full-pay student’s parents based on a percentage of their income or means. That would mean a lot to families who are really not able to “afford” full pay but who are willing to sacrifice. For some many middle class families in my state of Virginia, private pay vs UVA or Wm and Mary…no contest. Ditto for students from states with strong flagship colleges or honors colleges.

I understand that obtaining outside scholarships can reduce need based aid but can outside scholarships reduce merit aid? An e-mail from Vandy seemed to imply that. It seemed to be saying that any outside scholarships over the cost of attendance would reduce the CV award. Has anyone had any experience with this?

@georgiaonmymind - not true. 3rd party/outside scholarships does NOT reduce your merit awards ( it does affect if you are getting finaid). I sent an email to scholarships@vanderbilt.edu and Mr. Brent Tener replied that it will not affect my merit award. In my case the 3rd party award was not specific to tuition it was just scholarship towards college. You may want to give more details when you send an email to Vandy. Kudos to the Vandy team for the quick responses.
