Correction: I meant to say most schools DO NOT look at the additional info you submit but Vandy does.
Does anyone know when they typically notify Curb winners? Still holding out hope for Vanderbilt. I know so many kids have the same perfect grades, perfect or near perfect SATs, APs, leadership experiences, ECs, and awards. I saw the process develop with my first and it really is difficult to make sense of admission and scholarship decisions. There are so many wonderful high school seniors out there.
Didnāt get Corneliusā¦or Ingram
A lot of the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship precipitants may also be admitted by HYPS. How do you decide between Vanderbilt with CV vs HYPS?
I applied for scholarships and havenāt gotten an email about getting or not getting themā¦ do they come out in waves? Or is something wrong lol
@SSINFO - It comes down to personal preference. Some think HYPS is worth every penny and others donāt. My son got CV 2 years back and decided to join Vandy instead of Penn and Hopkins. As a premed he felt itās not worth paying full price at those two schools.
Admitted Vandy ED2 here with a full need-based ride. I put down on the Common App that I was interested in the CV scholarship (obviously not anymore), but Iām curious as to how the process goes. Was there an essay or other application or something that you had to fill out on the Vandy website? Because I donāt remember doing anything except just marking that I was interested in CV on the Common App.
@FranciscoPizarro There was an optional application on your portal, meaning that you would still be considered without it if you were a truly outstanding applicant. There was an essay; I donāt remember what it was. I think I recycled one from another school, as Vanderbilt didnāt ask for many of my essays to begin with.
I am currently a freshman CV at Vanderbilt majoring in math, economics, and Russian. If any CVs or admitted students here would like a tour of campus, a coffee meeting, or anything else, PM me!
Son applied RD and was not awarded the scholarship.
His metrics include scoring 36s on the ACT both times he took it (once without writing and once with writing), 4.0 unweighted, 800s on both SAT subject tests, and 5s on all 8 APs taken to date. He also is a National Merit finalist. There is quite literally nothing more he could have done academically.
ECs are very strong as well, including captain and All-State in football (state championship team), track captain, band captain, math team captain and numerous other non-athletic ECs.
We understand the ultra-competitiveness involved and are neither upset nor surprised by this outcome. Thatās just the way it is. He will have many good options.
That said, I still canāt help but shake my head.
Over qualified?. they might think you ultimately choose other top schools or even pre-med program of state university. ^:)^
@Gopher44 How were his essays? Thatās likely the most important part of this scholarship, but the one aspect you didnāt mention.
I was told that CV scholars in the school of Arts and Science are automatically accepted to the College Scholars honors program. Does anyone have experience with this program?
@clsof2023 thatās correct. You can take Honors seminars from first semester.
The College scholars program is similar to a State University honors program! We have events with other college scholars a few times per month, in addition to opportunities to have coffee with a professor and a group of five or six other students (coffee chats)! It is a great program and makes the vanderbilt community feel a little bit closer. The main perk is the honors seminars, though. They are all taught by wonderful professors that specifically chose to teach seminars to honors students. These seminars can replace the other writing/general education courses that are required for a Vanderbilt degree. An honors seminar is a great, low-stress course that gives you a chance to explore a topic in depth and in a very graduate-school style way. They are discussion driven and most people absolutely love theirs!
@morningJanet Is the College Scholars Program only open to students in the College Arts and Sciences?
For those of us who applied for CV and didnāt get it, do we have any idea when will we be hearing back on the Fred Russel - Grantland Rice Scholarship? Or should no news be considered as the notification that we have not been awarded it?
yes

@Gopher44 ā the playing field for the Vandy merit schollies is the top 1% of Vandyās applicant pool. So the air up there is pretty thin. Perfect grades, perfect test scores and awesome ECs are table stakes.
Probably comes down to the soft factors, like did the essays resonate.
