Cornell 2015 ED Hopefuls

no offense to berkeley, i dont think i have a chance of being rejected there.

as far as i know, UCs dont consider freshman and senior year…

i have 2340 SAT and almost clean 10-11th grade transcript with most rigorous courseload…
(i messed up in 9th grade)

i have canadian citizenship, and in this recession, UCs are accepting a big pool of intls since

we have to pay a lot to attend the state schools. lol.

berkeley is easy, no?

CAS for me

@yellow, a girl from my school got rejected from cornell, but admitted to stanford, harvard, and brown. Cornell is very selective with all there applicants. Good luck

Well, if my son gets rejected he will apply to princeton, yale, and harvard(lol). I think his stats are a little low but he is hooked(first generation, puerto rican male). Everybody gets lucky at some point in their life.

Now I have a premature worry: suppose I get into Cornell, but they later revoke my admissions because of my grade in physics. (I have a 90%, but I could get an 89 after the exam). Do you think that they could revoke my admissions based on this? I believe that I am a somewhat borderline candidate…

z,

I doubt a difference of 1pt would make a difference. You are driving yourself crazy. I know this is a very stressful time, but try not to over think everything.

I was wondering why I never got my pin, then UAO webmaster emailed me back saying I applied regular decision, even though I applied early… it says so on my application and on the application status website. Going crazy here.

Thanks @smileygirl, but I am concerned that the college would revoke me because then the grade would appear as a B+ on my transcript instead of an A-. But who knows, perhaps that won’t make such a difference to them.

depends on when they got it

I’m applying early for engineering, class of 2015. Not legacy or minority. Just a senior with a 97.1% average, 2180 SAT, some aps, 720 X 3 sat IIs, good pt paid job at a clinic for uninsured senior citizens, some real interesting ecs, super recs, from a Vermont public school.
I really hope I get in, but if I don’t, then there are other choices and that’s it.
This is the most stressed out thread on cc. Why?
Not even Yale or Stanford scea or even Duke ed applicants are this nervous on the cc threads, nothing like this going on on those threads. Why?
Remember people, this is not Yale or Stanford or MIT or Cambridge, not even close. It’s an “ivy” league school no doubt, but let’s be honest, it’s not Columbia or Harvard or even close. If we don’t get in, there are other choices.
This is a school that has never been ranked, by any survey, as being in the top 10 universities - ever.
There is no one applying or in the school who doesn’t wish they were in Harvard, Princeton, etc, even the kids applying to the hotel or agriculture schools at Cornell.
The super competitive atmosphere at cornell, especially college of engineering, talked about here in the cc threads is probably caused by students not really being happy that they did not apply, get in or go elsewhere. Read the posts here at cc about Columbia or any other top school, and you won’t hear anything like the fierce competition that goes on at Cornell. Then ask yourself why. Insecurity? Envy? Jealousy? If anyone, tells you they would go to Cornell over Columbia or Yale or Princeton, they are probably not being honest. If any engineering student says they would go to cornell over mit, it’s a lie. When you are in at mit, you are in, they don’t even give out grades first semester. Point - no need for super competition when you are in a school like mit.
Threads here at cc say Cornell is one of the “easier” of the top schools to get into, which is why many of us applied there in the first place, before we knew that if we are not athletes, rd would have been better. Yeah, sometimes people will not get into Cornell and get into a school like Columbia, but don’t think that happens too much.
We say we love Cornell, it’s beautiful, it’s great, it’s my dream and I don’t want to ever go anywhere else. I love 0 degrees and 10 feet of snow (actually I do, I’m used to it.). I like being far from civilization. Are we being truthful to ourselves? Is there anyone at any other top school like Princeton, MIT, etc who says they wish they were at Cornell? No.
At least 50% of the admits ed are recruited athletes or legacy with a connection. The other 50% have super stats and ecs and everything else and sadly enough that’s the 50% I’m in. Ask most cornell students with average stats and you will hear that they did not get in ED, Cornell, more than any other ivy, is big on sports and fills up about 50% of their ed admits with recruited athletes and legacy connections. Now that many of us here at cc have applied ed, we are kind of stuck. If you’re not connected, then rd is definitely the way to go at cornell. learned that the hard way I guess.
If after reading this, you disagree, think about it before posting. If it’s all true, at least be honest. At the admissions seminar I went to last year as a junior (our college guidance counselor took 10 of us) the guy in charge said that even though ed has an plus in admissions, they do fill up all their sports program recruits, etc. from ed, not rd. And they have a lot more sports teams than any other ivy university.
My feeling is that some will say it’s a ■■■■■, doesn’t know what she’s talking about or something else and Cornell is the best and my dream and don’t care what anyone else says.
OK, keep saying to yourself cornell is the greatest, best, most wonderful, my dream school and I don’t care what anyone says. Now don’t you feel better after saying that? Say it enough times, and you’ll believe it. It worked for me. Cornell is my dream!!!

englandern not true. I am hooked at MIT and will not even apply unless I do not get into Cornell. Cornell is m first choice. For many Cornell is our first choice.

at englander,

Cornell CoE in usnwr 2010 rankings is number eight. I believe this school is highly regarded in the engineering world. Many who are admitted to Cornel CoE have the stats for other schools…let’s be truthful.

On a side note my son preferred Cornell over MIT. He just loved the atmosphere there. I know he is competitive for that school because his sat score is in the top 175 for his ethnicity(although not a guarantee of admission).

another note,

Columbia is not rated higher than Cornell in engineering.

Yeah…I’m not sure what posting that message in two different threads is trying to achieve. Regardless of the fact that for many people (myself included) Cornell really is a perfect fit, what exactly are you contributing by assuming that everybody here is lying to themselves? I appreciate that you are trying to calm everybody down, and if I don’t get into Cornell I will accept that because I think I’ll be happy at any other school I applied to…however, some of your comments are in my opinion insulting and completely unneccessary. Good luck anyhow.

@smiley, cornell over MIT for engineering (or anything else)? are you serious?

It what my son wants…remember life isn’t only about the best school. It is about the atmosphere and enjoyment of your life over the next four years. Cornell fit that bill more than MIT for him. You will only be 18 - 22yrs once. You have different priorities, for you it is just about the name.

^^completely agree

poolboy everyone is different, Boston is a big city some prefer a smaller college town. I spent time at MIT and I really liked the students I stayed with. Cornell is my first choice even over MIT.

oh, sorry smily, I didn’t realize that Ithaca, NY now suddenly has a nicer atmosphere than Boston, MA. Didn’t realize that you can have more “enjoyment” in Ithaca than a major vibrant stimulating college town like boston with everything from theater, pro sports, museums, restaurants, T transportation everywhere. Sorry, my mistake.
Seriously, It’s really not about name. Cornell has a great name, but it’s not MIT, in name or atmosphere. But I don’t think anyone would say cornell is not an excellent school. It is.

It’s about the atmosphere he prefers…not what you prefer. If it were me I would have chosen MIT because I prefer a metropolitan environment. He prefers a more surburban atmosphere. No need to defend MIT, I think it is a great school. Noboday is putting down MIT. It is just not miy son’s first choice, although it seems to be yours. Why didn’t you apply there instead of Cornell ED?
