Cornell 2015 Fall Transfer Thread

Hey, thanks for adding me to the list as well.

I have a question to you guys, as I said, I’m an international applicant and I’ve applied for Financial Aid by completing CSS Profile, but right now, it says “Application Submitted”(after 1.5 month) but not “Reported”. What’s the situation in your applications, if applicable?

MATH at CAS. Transfer from Umich.

by the way, I mistakenly select math as my anticipated major, which is Econ actually, do you think I should email the transfer office?

And where do you guys see the material " sent for review ", I saw nothing like that on the Application Self-Service System.

Hey sorry this is a little abrupt, but I’d like to know how you like Umich. Cheers!

Just joined add me to the list please. Hi everyone I’m hoping to transfer to CHE for Human Development. Glad to have this thread as a support network. ::Hmph:: This is a nerve wrecking process!

@CHEhopeful15‌
Werent you accepted last year?

@MacchaBunny‌ I was wondering the same thing too. But mine just got the “sent in for review” status today. For me, all my materials were marked as complete a few days ago. So I assume you get that status once everything is in and they have updated your application status. Btw, it’ll be right underneath the test scores section.

@MacchaBunny‌ I would definitely tell the admissions office. Unless you want to wait until you’re in, and then switch your major. :>

Just remember that I chose development sociology as my alternative major, although I hardly expect that- I haven’t yet taken intro biology .

Hi guys, I decided that it’s time for me to join one of these transfer threads…

I’m an International student, which I hope will be to some sort of advantage, but probably not since I’m applying as a transfer. I’m Swedish, so nothing really under-representing.

Current college: Santa Barbara City College (#1 CC in the nation)
College/ Major Applying to: Information Science, CAS.
Entering as: Hopefully Junior, but probably Sophomore.
College GPA UW: 3.93
HS: No idea, since our grade system is different, but definitely lower than my College GPA (about B average). I also were a ‘Natural Science Programme’ major back in HS, so have a background in different kinds of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and a lot of Math.

SAT: None, only applied to schools that doesn’t require it for transfer.
TOEFL: 100 as required

Classes Taken:
Programming fundamentals (Java), Flash I: Interactive Fundamentals (introduced to AS3), currently taking Flash II: Simple Games, Video Game Design (working with Unreal Engine 4), Computer Animation (Maya), Introduction to Multimedia (theoretical media analysis), then classes such as Web Design, Media Design, Digital Imaging (Photoshop), 2-D Design: Composition & Color.

Honors Classes Taken (A in all of them):
Eng 110/120 (Advanced College level English), Philosophy - Introduction To Ethics, Ethnic Studies - Immigrant Experience In Us, Film Studies - Intro To Film, Communication - Public Speaking, ENG - Topics In Literature.

Extracurriculars:
3 years of SBCC Ambassadors (we organize numerous events for students on campus, ranging from soccer tournaments to volunteering). Phi Theta Kappa Leadership, 2 semesters as V.P for Fellowship, 2 semester as Vice President (have organized a number of guest talks, volunteering and fund-raisers). 1 year Astronomy Club Officer, and 3 years of Astronomy Tutoring.

Work:
I currently have an internship under the Senior Director of International Programs, because I have been working 2 jobs in the International Office. I’m a student peer for the International Office, covering the front desk, helping students, processing files and sensitive information. I also work for the Study Abroad Office as a Graphic Designer, creating their marketing material, such as flyers, posters, brochures, as well as figuring out new ways to reach students.

  • as stated before, I work as an Astronomy tutor.

Miscellaneous:
I received an Outstanding Student of the Year award, in the field of International Students,
Certificate of leadership training from the SBCC Ambassadors,
Certificate of Excellence, voted by my peers for outstanding commitment to the SBCC Ambassador program,
Tutor training Certificate,
Phi Theta Kappa membership Certificate,
I have created posters and marketing material for Phi Theta Kappa and Honors Program,
Re-designed T-shirts and table cloth for the SBCC Ambassadors

Essay: I start of with playfully show my journey with technology, and how I have watched the field grow and how it has intrigued me. I later discuss my struggle of overcoming depression, and how my achievements made through games helped my find a purpose, and I end with stating that I want to create games intertwined with science and education, to help others.

Recommendations: my Ambassador advisor that also work in the International Office (she writes killer letters), my media teacher that’s also the head of the Multimedia/Gaming department, and the head of the Honors Program.

What do you guys think? I don’t really expect to be admitted, but Fingers crossed

I think your record is pretty impressive. However, keep in mind that the applicant pool for international students is very competitive, and you are competing with a lot of 4.0 people. Although you are junior standing right now, I still think not having an SAT score might put you in disadvantage (I might be wrong b/c your college record is gonna be more convincing). That being said, never feel discouraged. I applied last year with a 4.0 GPA and got rejected. I somehow managed to maintain my records and decided to try again this year. Let’s both hope. :stuck_out_tongue:

Wow, I haven’t logged back for months, thought no one cares about my thread. But now we have 9 pages already, keep it up guys and thanks for sharing!!!

Thanks for keeping the list updated! It’s awesome seeing the different majors we have represented here.

And @Thessogirl, your application looks great. I don’t think the missing standardized test scores will be an issue as doing well at a top community college says a lot about your academic potential.

Yes I know, my GPA is my curse! I got 2 B’s my first semester because of language barrier, or rather, the fact that I had never heard about MLA format before, lol! X_X I was so confused, MLA is so different from how we wrote essays back home.
It’s awful to live with, and it has been grinding my gears for years now that my unluck (since incoming International Students don’t really have that many classes to choose from when they arrive) from my first semester will probably prevent me from attending my dream school! Well, there is always graduate school too, I’ll be okay, we both will be okay!

spreading optimism

Well, also being an international applicant, I think I should put my stats here as well.

Applying for: Communication/Development Sociology
HS average: ~94/100 ( I studied in China and my transcript only shows the average score)
SAT: 2240 (690CR/770M/780W)
Toefl: Waived
SAT Subjects: 800 MathII, 800 Physics

Previous College: one Chinese university whose journalism major ranks top in China
Major: Broadcast Journalism
Credits: 62 in one academic year (yeah sounds crazy)
GPA: 3.79 (few students there could get a 3.8+)
I spent my freshman year there and then transferred into OSU.

Current College: Ohio State U Columbus
Major: Journalism
Credits: 32, with 17 in progress
GPA: 4.00 (including mid-term report)
Rec letters: 3 letters, from OSU professors who know me well

EC’s: editorial internship, leader of a documentary filming team, writer in a college newspaper, volunteer for a French film exhibition, junior reporter in university TV station, leader of a website design team, psychology project team, etc.

I think I have two main disadvantages: first, almost all courses I’ve taken in OSU are in 1000 levels- just to fulfill CALS’ course requirements; second, I take all the required courses this semester. Namely, all those courses only have mid-term grades. Will these disadvantages greatly hurt my application?

@Thessogirl‌ I was in exactly the same situation! I also encountered great language barrier last semester, and that composition course nearly killed me…

@Heli824‌ No, I’m a different person. But my username is very similar to a person from last years thread. (Nice to know I’m not the only one who stalked all of last years thread)

@CHEhopeful15‌
Ah OK, welcome then! You seem very similar to them considering your cat photo. I definitely have spent an unhealthy amount of time on last years threads.

did anyone finish idoc for financial aid?

@TVNerd‌
Oh my, all my key material was marked as received a week or more ago, but it has not sent to review. Sad story.
