Hi guys, I decided that it’s time for me to join one of these transfer threads…
I’m an International student, which I hope will be to some sort of advantage, but probably not since I’m applying as a transfer. I’m Swedish, so nothing really under-representing.
Current college: Santa Barbara City College (#1 CC in the nation)
College/ Major Applying to: Information Science, CAS.
Entering as: Hopefully Junior, but probably Sophomore.
College GPA UW: 3.93
HS: No idea, since our grade system is different, but definitely lower than my College GPA (about B average). I also were a ‘Natural Science Programme’ major back in HS, so have a background in different kinds of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and a lot of Math.
SAT: None, only applied to schools that doesn’t require it for transfer.
TOEFL: 100 as required
Classes Taken:
Programming fundamentals (Java), Flash I: Interactive Fundamentals (introduced to AS3), currently taking Flash II: Simple Games, Video Game Design (working with Unreal Engine 4), Computer Animation (Maya), Introduction to Multimedia (theoretical media analysis), then classes such as Web Design, Media Design, Digital Imaging (Photoshop), 2-D Design: Composition & Color.
Honors Classes Taken (A in all of them):
Eng 110/120 (Advanced College level English), Philosophy - Introduction To Ethics, Ethnic Studies - Immigrant Experience In Us, Film Studies - Intro To Film, Communication - Public Speaking, ENG - Topics In Literature.
Extracurriculars:
3 years of SBCC Ambassadors (we organize numerous events for students on campus, ranging from soccer tournaments to volunteering). Phi Theta Kappa Leadership, 2 semesters as V.P for Fellowship, 2 semester as Vice President (have organized a number of guest talks, volunteering and fund-raisers). 1 year Astronomy Club Officer, and 3 years of Astronomy Tutoring.
Work:
I currently have an internship under the Senior Director of International Programs, because I have been working 2 jobs in the International Office. I’m a student peer for the International Office, covering the front desk, helping students, processing files and sensitive information. I also work for the Study Abroad Office as a Graphic Designer, creating their marketing material, such as flyers, posters, brochures, as well as figuring out new ways to reach students.
- as stated before, I work as an Astronomy tutor.
Miscellaneous:
I received an Outstanding Student of the Year award, in the field of International Students,
Certificate of leadership training from the SBCC Ambassadors,
Certificate of Excellence, voted by my peers for outstanding commitment to the SBCC Ambassador program,
Tutor training Certificate,
Phi Theta Kappa membership Certificate,
I have created posters and marketing material for Phi Theta Kappa and Honors Program,
Re-designed T-shirts and table cloth for the SBCC Ambassadors
Essay: I start of with playfully show my journey with technology, and how I have watched the field grow and how it has intrigued me. I later discuss my struggle of overcoming depression, and how my achievements made through games helped my find a purpose, and I end with stating that I want to create games intertwined with science and education, to help others.
Recommendations: my Ambassador advisor that also work in the International Office (she writes killer letters), my media teacher that’s also the head of the Multimedia/Gaming department, and the head of the Honors Program.
What do you guys think? I don’t really expect to be admitted, but Fingers crossed
