Hey guys, I see that a lot of early decision applicants were deferred; however, we should not lose hope.
My approach is that I’m considering this a second chance. . . an opportunity to correct some of the mistakes I made on my ED app. I’m also planning on sending in updates on awards and things I’ve received since sending in my initial application.
If anyone has any advice on notifying Cornell of continued interest, support posts, or even just angry venting/rants that he/she would like to voice, feel free to comment.
FYI: If anyone was wondering, I was deferred from ILR.
@CCSenioritis Literally me, I can’t believe we have to wait so long. April 1st just feels so far away; however, my birthday is a couple of days later, so an acceptance than would probably be the best present I could imagine.
(Lol, in similar vein, a couple of days ago my mom was like “____ what do you want for Christmas?” and I was like “Cornell”)
If anyone finds out if applicants can still send in supplemental documents, please post. I called admissions today but they are not receiving phone calls due to ED results.
I guess no one read my post on the ED decision thread about what to do when deferred or wait listed. My older kid was deferred at her ED and then wait listed at two top 20 schools. She got off both WL schools.
I am sorry of your deferment, but it also gives you another shot. Another way to look at it is now you have a lot more options.
There must be a thread from previous years that discusses dos/donts for deferred students? What to do and what not to do? Some best practices. Anybody knows?
I would advise not joining any FB or social media for deferred students. You want the adcoms to know you through your application, not what you post on FB. If you think the admin for the group could be diligent enough not to include anyone who is not a deferred student then you have more trust than me. I advised both of my kids to make their social media private, especially when they were applying to schools, jobs or during rush.
In Jan (after adcoms have taken care of the angry parents and big donors), see if your GC could give the adcoms a call to see what you could do to improve your application.
Send an updated packet in Feb - first semester grades, another essay, additional awards, recommendation letters (can be from outside of academic, especially if you have some meaningful ECs). Ask your GC to write another LOR if possible. Spend time on that essay, get few adults to review it.
Keep up your grades.
Move on. Try to get to know your other RD schools. Spend next few weeks to get your RD apps out. Make sure your RD school list is well balanced with safeties, matches and reaches. This includes financial safeties. If you haven't done so already, it is not too late to show more love to your safeties and matches in the next few months. Many safety and match schools will reject students who treat them as such.
In March, if you have mid semester grades (especially if they are good) then send them in, and update adcoms with any additional awards. Good luck to you all.
Cornell is a dream school. It can’t take everybody applied in ED. It has its limitations. I tried my best to get admitted but couldn’t. I am deferred. I feel I couldn’t meet the required standard set by Cornell. I am sad but not defeated. Life is like that. Cornell is beautiful, Cornell is gorgeous, Cornell is generous, Cornell is my sky which I could not touch as I am not capable. Thank you Big Red, even though you have not considered me.Still, you are my dream school. Thanks to all my fellow CC friends with a very little hope to get admitted in RD.
Agree with above. There is no One True School for any kid, and a lot more fish in the sea. Sure, update/upgrade your app if there’s a reasonable way to do so, but the odds are going to be against you at ANY highly selective school, so proceed accordingly.
