Cornell 2021 ED - Deferral Support Group

To those deferred, I was in your shoes last year! It was tough, but you’ll get through it!
Remember to keep your grades up and your performance in EC’s consistent! I will tell you this: if you applied to a
contract school, around 40% of deferred students end up with a guaranteed transfer. In my group of ~8 students,
almost everyone who applied to a contract school received a GT, with one student being accepted through Diversity
Day.

Don’t lose hope! This is not the end for you. After all, if they didn’t want you they could have rejected you outright!

If anyone has questions or wants to vent feel free to post here or shoot me a DM! I have a friend whose parents are professors at Cornell and friends in ILR, CAS, HumEC, AEM/Dyson and Ag. who may also be able to address any concerns you might have!

And most of all, remember that you are more than a college decision. Success and intelligence are not synonymous with an education at Cornell - or any school for that matter! You can (and will) achieve great things regardless of the college you attend!

All of you have my very, very best!

Anyone know anything about the percentage of ILR applicants that are deferred and offered straight admissions (not GT)

Good luck guys! Not sure about the stats @051066 , but Cornell accepts around 12-15% each year in regular decision. I’d say it’s hardest to get into Engineering/CAS by statistics alone (the acceptance rates range in the 10-20% from what I’ve heard and read), and ILR is somewhere in the middle-high end of all the departments

@NotAMathlete any advice on how to impress HumEc admissions?

Here we are men and women
Into the dreaded limbo,
Suspended like a feathery hen
The pool of mumbo-jumbo.

A thread of class and high repute
What I wanted so very well
But all that now is a point very moot
Since deferred I am, Cornell!

What are your guy’s next step in this process? Are you going to keep on pursuing Cornell?

Yeah

Can someone please post a deferral letter?

@iamdue1

The admissions selection committee has reviewed your early decision application for admission for the fall of 2017. After careful deliberation, we have decided to postpone a final decision on your application until the regular review process in the spring. We realize that you were hoping for a final decision at this time, but we believe it appropriate to review your application with those of the other candidates before making a final decision. We will notify you of our final decision by early April.

Please be assured that your application will, once again, receive thorough consideration during our regular decision process. Although you are not required to submit additional information, you are invited to submit supplemental information that demonstrates your intellectual and extracurricular interests. Supplemental information may be submitted online at https://forms.admissions.cornell.edu/webform/admissions/submit.php. Also, remember to submit applications to other colleges and universities since you will not know the final outcome of your application for admission to Cornell until next April.

We appreciate your special interest in Cornell and wish you continued success in your senior year.

Sincerely,

Shawn L. Felton
Director of Undergraduate Admissions
Cornell University

Being deferred is different than being waitlisted, right?

@camcan yes, deferred to RD means you go in the regular decision pool. You could still be waitlisted after the RD process.

This thread is dead. Any other thread for deferrals?

@vcq7890 All the threads are usually dead unless the deadlines are near or the decisions are about to be made available.

truth above

@sargamprakash Ok I see. Thanks.

Has anyone contacted the admission office yet(email or phone or in person)?
I know everyone is as anxious as me to find out where went wrong. I am just not sure when is the right time and what is the right way to reach out to them. I am sure many people wonder the same thing as I do…

@RUHTRA999 Yeah I kinda have the same question. I emailed AAP asking for an interview (didn’t ask for app feedback) since I didn’t have it the first time round. They said it wasn’t allowed.
As for the feedback, I’ll contact them after Christmas or maybe early January. I’m prepping up supplementals from all areas that I possibly can, so knowing where exactly my application was weak won’t practically help me much.

My school counselor called and never got a response, but just yesterday I was contacted via email by the officer for the school I applied to. Very friendly and helpful. The officer also told me some strong points on my application as well as giving me the general “send any new scores, semester grades, letter of continued interest, and new achievements/activities.” Encouraging to say the least, and I recommend contacting admissions as it’s welcoming to talk to a person and see their opinions of your app. Scared to send my semester grades as the final for one of my classes wasn’t too hot

@Ornithologeek Thank you for the information

I wonder how much will semester grades really help one out of the deferral group, since, for Cornell, high class grades are generally & unconditionally expected…Like, for example, will a 4.75 semester GPA really have a solid influence?

@Ornithologeek Thanks that was really helpful!

The self-service portal says that Cornell is on a winter break and will be back up on January 3rd. So that’s probably when I’ll get in touch with them.
Just out of curiosity, how late do you guys think is appropriate to submit supplements or get feedback?
