Hey, I'm going to apply Early Decision to Cornell (because I freakin' love it!).
Human Ecology is essentially the perfect fit for me, and I fell in love with its tenets and ideologies. I'm from New York State and the decreased tuition offered at HumEc, CALS, and ILR is an added incentive for me, since I cannot afford private institutions (my parents make too much money to qualify for financial aid, but too little to pay full tuition for an Ivy-caliber university). Human Ecology is undoubtedly my first choice, but I was wondering whether applying to CALS as my alternate choice would ultimately hurt my chance of admission to HumEc. I, by a vast margin, prefer HumEc to CALS (im going to be one of the hordes of pre-meds attending college), but would it be beneficial to apply to CALS as my alternate-choice college or to just apply to HumEC?

Thank you very much for your answers, this is kind of a pressing issue for me since I already wrote my HumEc essay but don't know whether to write the CALS essay or not.
And hopefully I'll join the Cornell Class of 2013!

I don't remember the exact statistics, but I know that of the applicants who applied to an alternate college this year, only 5% were even considered by the alternate and only 2% (I don't know if that was 2% OF the 5% or 2% overall) were accepted by their alternates. So unless you're REALLY a strong applicant and you fit the CALS mold, applying to an alternate probably won't affect you.

^Just so no one comes in and says it was 4.999999 %, I wouldn't swear my life on those exact statistics.

If you think HumEc is the best fit for you...go for it. Selecting an alternate choice won't hurt your chances....but like the previous said, unless the CALS adcom can see that you are a strong fit they won't even bother to look at your application (and that comes directly from the mouth of a CALS adcom member).

i dont understand why cornell even granted that 2nd school policy...

it seems cornell is creating too much red tape and twisting itself up in it o.O

chandlerbing - i'm not sure about the whole humec/cals admission policies, but i just wanted to comment on your username, which i think is completely awesome!

afchang- YESSSSSSS! I love my username too! I just finished watching all 10 seasons of Friends. I occasionally find myself making Chandler-esque jokes :P

Yeah I'm definitely going HumEc ED, but will a HumEC adcom read my application, read my HumEc essay about how much I love HumEc's perspective and mission, then see that I'm also applying alternate to CALS, read my CALS essay (since everything is after all on the Cornell Supplement), and think, "why is this applicant applying alternate to CALS, he just professed utmost devotion to coming to OUR school"

I'm pretty sure they will not see your CALS essay

Any more opinions?
Also guys, just tell me what you like about Cornell, especially Human Ecology
Which college in Cornell is the least selective?

all of them are very selective for different reasons.
CAS has one of the lowest admit rates,
CALS looks for people genuinely interested in the sciences and agriculture,
Eng has a high admit rate, but really high standards for high school curriculum and SAT scores,
HumEc looks for people with passion in nutrition, human development, and anything to do with the interactions of people,
ILR looks for people with a passion in labor relations and the social sciences,
Hotel looks for people with a passion in the hospitality industry.

So you see, there really isn't a "least selective" just selective for different qualities.

lol I am part of the minority that got into alternate choice.
I e-mailed them about it and they said it would have no affect my chances of getting accepted to primary school.
But i applied to bioengineering for both CALS and Engineering..so pretty much the same thing lol.

thanks guys
chendrix: thanks a lot for those descriptions, i'm looking into premed (yes, i know) but i really love humec's perspective on academics and life in general
anyone else?
i would love it if some HumEc students could tell me about their experiences there.
Or anyone say anything in general about Cornell/Cornell admissions
thanks!
