Cornell admit rate.....

CALS - 50.9%
Architecture - 22.1%
Arts and Sciences - 7.8%
Engineering - 31.3%
Hotel - 25.3%
Human Ecology - 43.2%
ILR - 52.5%

I am a psychology/sociology major.
I know it is in the arts and science department.
Why is the admit rate so low compare to other departments..
7.8? wow it's competitive...

Alright, well here's the deal. ILR, Human Ecology and CALS are all SUNY schools within Cornell. They are excellent nevertheless. They have traditionaly been easier to get into than say CAS just because fewer people apply. BUT the bigger reason is that the SUNY schools tend to have departments and majors that are not normally seen or considered my many First Year applicants, thus, they rely more on transfer students to fill that void. How many FY applicants want to go to CALS for Developmetn Sociology? Transfers, however, tend to find these more specific departments as they have already spent time trying to figure out what they want to study beyond the more basic majors like English, Bio., Econ, History, etc. (CAS majors). I don't know if I'm saying it right, but CALS, Human Econ. and ILR rely a little more on transfers than the others for whatever reason, thus their accpetance rate is higher.

CAS is as competitive as it is because it does not rely on transfers as much and few people transfer OUT. If more left, the transfer rate coming in would go up. It is also the "heart" of Cornell I suppose, the more traditonal of the schools offered and has generally more departments. I believe, although it may not be true, Cornell doesn't want certain departments getting too crowded and trys to strike a balance in how many kids are in each department. That being said, isyou are apply for psychology but not a whole lot of kids left the department or CAS as a whole for that matter, it will be harder to get into.

I don't know, just a shot at trying to understand it.
