After submitting my Cornell application, I was offered an interview by a Cornell alumni. I live in a rural town so it would have to be over the phone or skype, however, I’m really not a good talker over the phone (like really bad). Cornell is one of my top choices, would it affect my chances if I respectfully decline?
The interview is considered so I would take the opportunity. Not taking it shows a lack of interest on your part (which it probably isn’t, but it will seem that way).
How you do on the interview won’t affect your chances by much anyways; it’s a really casual conversation, and it is good practice for potential future phone/skype interviews.
Agreed, I would take the interview. If it helps you can request a Skype interview as it will be face-to-face.
Do SKYPE!! I had the choice of doing an interview via phone or via video; video is so much better. I thought it would be harder because it wasn’t actual face to face, but it didn’t even make a difference. It felt like a regular interview (in this case with two graduates)–unfortunately, one of the graduates had bad connection and would disconnect every 10 min, but it still went really well.
All things being equal, if you turn down an alumni interview that would not be a plus sign to your favor.
Do it! I was scared when I got an offer after I applied for ED, and the interview went pretty terribly if I say so myself. But nevertheless I got in, so I think it’s safe to say it won’t affect you TOO much if the conversation is kind of awkward. :’) good luck!!
Son got a request as well. Does every applicant get an interview request?
applicants outnumber volunteer interviewers @herewelearn So assignments are random. Your son’s request is not indicative of outcome.
