Cornell and Internationals

Hi, I am an international.

I read somewhere that Cornell likes internationals. Is it true? How is the competition? Is it as difficult to get into as compared to say, MIT, Stanford or Columbia [SEAS]?

Oh, if I am applying to Engineering, do they look at writing? Do they superscore?

Does asking for aid go against me?

Thanks for your time!

You wont get that much aid if you ask.

No school in Cornell looks at writing

The competition for intls is EXTREMELY tough unless you are from Canada or Mexico

^ Thanks

Anyone else with anything interesting to add?

Cornell is able to provide financial aid to 12 international students per year and it's merit-based.

^ 12? Collegeboard says 217 total. I thought they do not award merit-based aid?

Do they superscore the SAT though?

I found a Cornell Chronicle article form 1-2 months ago that says they award FA to 12 internationals per year....although they do expect to change this in a few years. FA for US, Canadian and Mexican students is need-based and admission for them is need blind. FA for international students is merit-based and they can only offer aid to a few students...so they use a merit-based system. Consequently...admission for international students is not need-blind.

I am fairly sure that Cornell does superscore the SAT, but they do not look at the writing section.

the 217 includes people from canada and mexico, who recieve need based aid.

I heard this year the number was 19, not 12 and that they are trying to increase it despite the financial hardship.

The admin i talked to on cornell webchat said that cornell is need blind in admissions towards internationals, however financial aid is merit based. you can apply for aid, and still get in with no aid.

what is the average sat scores for international students at cornell?

Thanks Elvito!

also, just because they are need blind does not mean that they accept intls as much as regular applicants. Their acceptance rates are much lower, and the competition is much stiffer.
