Cornell and score choice

I have been going crazy trying to find an answer to this question. I have posted on CC and even emailed Cornell admissions. No one can give me a straight answer. I am going to call the admissions office directly tomorrow, but I decided to give it one more try on CC.

So Cornell's Subject Test requirements vary by school. Some schools only recommend 2 tests, while some schools require 2 tests. For example, CALS recommends 2 and CAS requires 2. ILR requires 1 subject tests, but ACT test takers are exempt from this requirement. ILR is the only school which allows ACT takers to be exempt from the subject test requirement.

I am applying to both CALS (primary) and CAS (alternate). I am sending my ACT scores as they far superior to my SAT scores (33 and 34 vs. 2030 and 2150).

My question is this: Since CAS requires 2 Subject Tests, can I send my ACT along with Subject Tests WITHOUT sending my SAT I scores?

This is the answer I received via email from Cornell admissions office. It is very vague:

Please note that Cornell does not participate in the College Board’s Score Choice. When submitting the ACT, SAT, and the required SAT Subject Tests, plan to submit all scores.

This answer, along with CollegeBoard warning me when I uncheck my SAT I scores in the score report, make it seem that if I am to send any SAT Subject Tests I have to send SAT I as well EVEN if I am sending the ACT in lieu of the SAT I.

If that is the case, it seems absolutely ridiculous that I am required to send SAT I scores even if I'm sending ACT scores!!

Sorry this post is so long.

TLDR: Can I send my ACT along with Subject Tests WITHOUT sending my SAT I scores?

Please help. Thanks!

Cornell requires ALL test scores, so you must send your SAT I. However, they say they consider only the highest scores.

It clearly says on the website and in the email I received that:

Students applying for fall 2012 freshman admission are required to submit scores from the SAT OR the ACT with Writing.

So is this a lie? I don’t in fact have the choice between SAT or ACT if I am submitting Subject Test scores (which some schools require). Thats some BS if you ask me.

you raise an interesting point. Like you, I would prefer to submit my ACT score rather than my SAT I score with it

This sucks. They say they consider only the highest scores, but a 2030 and 2150 are quite bad for Cornell while a 34 is quite great for Cornell. There is no way they will just “pass” over the 2030 and 2150 and solely consider the 33 and 34. Once they see those low scores, they will no doubt be biased.

I feel that there is a difference between not sending SAT I scores and not allowing SAT I score choice. Since Cornell allows the choice between ACT and SAT I, sending ACT should be enough. If one sends all SAT II scores, it should satisfy the requirement of sending all SAT scores, since SAT II is different from SAT I. To be sure, it is better to call Cornell to get a definite answer. Please report the Cornell’s answer here. Thanks.

Yeah right now i have a 35 ACT and a 2000 SAT ( 1380 CR/M). But i get my new sat score back on thursday. Either way, it’s unlikely i scored a 1560 sat so i would much rather not send the sat

Thank you akbear for your reply. I kept fighting with myself whether I should send all my scores (SAT I and SAT IIs) or screw it and use score choice and just send SAT II along with the ACT. I decided to flip a coin…heads for sending all scores and tails for score choice. It landed heads and I was literally about to send all my scores until at the last moment refreshed this page and read your post (sounds stupid I know but I was getting desperate lol).

I will call Cornell’s admissions office tomorrow after school and post their answer here.

Okay so I called the admissions office today.

The woman said that if I sat for any SAT I have to submit it. So essentially, I was correct. The SAT or ACT statement is a lie. I truly don’t get that option unless I just simply never took the SAT I or opt out of sending Subject Tests (which isn’t an option because all schools recommend them, which means I have to send them if I am to have any chance at getting accepted).

What a joke. Now I’m gonna have to hope my great ACT scores will outshine my crappy SAT scores…

Well, I guess we have to live with it or apply for other colleges.

Would the college know if you just deselect your unfavored scores ?

If they like the rest of your application, they don’t look for reasons to NOT accept you (SAT I) but rather they use the highest score that will help their overall average scores used in the rating game.
