Cornell Architecture

hey there, just thought i would drop in and say hello to other CC-arch kids. i hope the new building will be ready for us too, i think koolhaas is an alumnus (alumni?) so they should just tell him to speed it up

i hear ground breaking starts next year...typically it would only take about a year to build right? the site is not too big or complex for it to take longer than a year =)

i can imagine all of us five years from now, discussing how our golden years were started from some crazy online site, known as

...college confidential

there's plenty of cooperation in the arch. program. Nobody has to hide their project or anything. Students feed off of each other's ideas in a positive manner.

Cornell's Architorture is amazing... :D

I got into cornell... what are my chances of getting into cooper union....

does anyone feel the same way as i do?

i've never done professional architecture education all my life, let alone one architecture class.

i'm to scared to get right into 5 years of professional education without even a glimpse of what it is going to be like,,, and it will be almost impossible to change what i do later on

i'm just too scared i wouln't be able to catch up with everyone else in Cornell.

Does anyone feel this?

hey, justin here. i changed screen names.
evahn, i think every arch admissions are really subjective so you can't really calculate your chances. someone sent in a brick as his portrait for the cooper test and got in..

omgplease, you're not alone. most people who go to cornell first year start out at the same pace. 15 summer kids got in this year but it's not like we've gotten very far. don't worry about it. the curriculum that we learn in the summer is less emphasized now as cornell progresses more towards contemporary architecture..so it will be brand new for all of us

i used to think that too, not very sure whether arch was for me because i didn't have a real arch experience. if you've had an arch class in hs, trust me, college is not like that all. it's very different and you can really only experience it by being there. for me, it was a very positive experience and my interest for architecture has grown AFTER i attended the program and actually had a real college arch exposure.

i'd say go for it. i think you'll enjoy it. if you don't, you can always drop out. there's no shame in doing that. it's not worth it if you enjoy it.

*if you don't enjoy it

thanx sashimi ^-^
i'm gaining some confidence now!
but i just found out i got into RISD too!!
now what to choose between cornell, rice, and risd...

justin, i told you that story about a brick

and it wasn't for the cooper arch test it was the art test, so don't scare anyone. i think the cooper home test is really abstract etc. and basically you can't hide anything-- artistically, philosophically, etc. cornell, i made a portfolio with the best i had and that was pretty much it.

yeah ann's portfolio kicked ass!

i like that this post has disintegrated into me and you talking. great.

so guys

who are your favorite architects

"our own studio"= individual cubicles or a huge studio for this entering class of freshmen?

Also what's this thing about the Cooper union and submitting pictures?!

omgplease, one thing that's good about cornell is that in case you decide you don't like arch, there are tons of other majors/other schools you can choose to transfer into... even my interviewer emphasized that.

I don't have a fav. architect, but basically I like the high gothic period in every European country xcept spain!

ahaha great ann, that's the first question we'll be hearing from other arch buddies every minute we arrive on campus.

jenny,

the studios are partitioned into groups. Each group (about 12 people) has a TA and a professor to guide your work..so you won't have walls blocking you and the people in your group space. it's pretty open. you won't need to worry about being separated from others. you can easily walk to other sections and people often do that if they are exhausted from work. people also like to draw on the walls...that's another great thing about having an old studio (sucks for the janitors though). people aren't afraid to experiment =)

Have any Archies gotten their financial aid package yet?
I'm still waiting... from CA btw

I think fin. aid will be the final deciding factor for me (b/c USC=$33k scholarship)

i didn't get any aid from rice, cornell, or cmu

but wow! 33k is such a nice deal...is that merit or financial need?

cornell killed me with the financial aid.

i was kidding about the favorite architect, but rock on. yeah... the thing about cooper union was kind of a joke too, someone asked about how likely it was that they would get into cooper if they got into cornell, and we were pointing out that it's fairly hard to compare admissions processes

hey, so could i see your pf too anotherann?

ahhh! i don't know if it is properly online anymore... AIM me at l1ne9 and i will try to find it on flickr for you. it's pretty lame, kind of weird how much you change in a year, no?
