Cornell/Brown ED Chance! Will chance back!!!

I want to apply early decision to either Brown or Cornell this fall and I want to get a pretty good idea of where I stand as far as acceptance is concerned. I really want to go to Brown, but I know Cornell is easier to get into as far as acceptance rates go.

I'm planning on majoring in either biology or chemistry for pre-med. My essay is going to be about how I love to be in leadership positions in order to inspire people and make them better and how my parents' divorce and my mom moving across the country played into the struggles I faced doing so.

I think you look like a strong applicant with good academic credentials and test scores. Based on people I know who have been accepted into Cornell ED, you should be given acceptance there. If you really want to go to Brown, however, I would definitely recommend applying there ED. You would not want to have any regrets if you were bound into the wrong college! One thing I would suggest is that you really emphasize the extracurriculars that are important to you in your application, and show your commitment and passion for these activities. Good luck to you!

Chance back?

Thanks for the chancing!

Like any Ivy League school, getting in is almost like a lottery. I think your scores are good for Cornell (who I’ve heard focuses less on them) and decent for Brown (wouldn’t hurt to get up Reading). Obviously, it looks like you are a strong leader. However, your class ranking could go up. It also seems (but I could be wrong) that you lack some “major achievements” (state and national level recognition?).

All in all,
Cornell - high match / low reach
Brown - reach

Good luck!

Your academics are pretty standard Would be nice to know your SAT II scores. VERY BAD idea taking AP classes but not taking the exam (I assume because your AP class list is longer than your AP exam list) because universities think you are hiding bad scores.

You have a lot of EC but some of them show a lack of involvement, like the 1-year ones which look like a ploy to get into a good university (I’m in the same situation so I’m not condescending). However, you do have good leadership roles which demonstrate good social and communicative skills.

Your awards are also sub-par. You need to get more recognition in contests outside of your school because those are more competitive hence are weighed more. However, getting those top awards in a class of 600+ is quite difficult feats - ones that the universities won’t overlook

Overall you show a decent academic resume paired with some pretty good leadership roles. Sorry if my analysis sounded harsh.

I think your shot at both schools is pretty high especially ED so good luck

If you’ve think, chance mine:

Cornell ED -probable acceptance
Brown ED -mid reach
From my observation, brown wants unique students. It’s a weird school with its acceptances because I know a valedictorian with a 2400 SAT who was rejected.
You seem to have a lot of activities, but none really seem to scream out the science kid. Being well-rounded is good, but I believe passionate kids is what is becoming more desired. Don’t apply pre-med. Bio at cornell and your a lock in.
CHance me back
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1177240-chances-suggestions-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

well i have the bronze national level recognition. i’ll also be a form of an AP scholar. what types of other things are considered state and national recognition?

what if i don’t have any science ECs available to me? if i don’t apply premed, how will that affect my chances at getting into a good med school?

Your academics are as good as they’ll be, but not super strong. Your ECs are alright, too, but I don’t see a consistent focus or achievement in one area. That said, you do have a shot at both Brown and Cornell. I’d say a higher chance in Cornell, but I suggest you apply based on whichever school most interests you.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1179664-meow-i-like-princeton-williams-yale-dartmouth-guess-if-they-like-me-back.html</a></p>

I agree completely with everything that has been said before. I do, however, have some advice for you:

Certain EC’s aren’t available to people–you must make them available  try starting some sort of club related to science or tutoring kids in science.

But since it is getting down to the wire, I’d recommend that you choose from your EC’s wisely–you cannot list them all, so I would focus on polishing ad highlighting the ones that pertain to science and your intended major.

I say this to just about everyone intending on pre-med but…don’t apply as pre-med. Apply under a more obscure science major. Remember, you can pretty much change your major the first day you get there.

You’re a pretty strong applicant in terms of academics, but you lack the focus that most of the Ivy’s look for. Just stress something throughout the application( your essay idea is great!), and you should be accepted! :)

Chance me?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1181604-yale-harvard-princeton-ea.html</a></p>

You’re not a strong applicant academically. Rank 20-somethings don’t normally get into ivies unless they have another hook. Cornell, maybe, but probably not Brown. I’d also like to add that unless you are applying as a legacy or athlete to Brown, there is minimal use in going ED. It confers no advantage. Cornell would probably be a better choice for ED if you are satisfied with the school.

There is no advantage to most schools to apply ED unless you know that is for sure that school is easily your first choice, “where I would most love to go” school. (For any binding school.) If it is early action, but not binding, then you can be a bit more “just to try”, but it should still be in your top wish few. I would agree that your chances for Brown are not great unless there is something missing from what you have above that makes you “more unique” (Brown loves first one in family to go to college, for example). I also agree that your ECs look broad, but not with the dedication, depth that Brown prefers to numbers.

i think for cornell u look really good. but brown… i think if u nail essay u hsve a great chance. strong gpa act… good luck!
