Cornell called my guidance counselor?

I applied ED to communication at CALS with killer essays and hooks (female Native American artist). However, my grades and test scores were below those of the average Cornell applicant. She told me she is going to call them back tomorrow and that she didn't know what they wanted, yet she called my house phone, leaving a message for my mother.
DOES IT SOUND LIKE SOMETHING IS WRONG?!

I have never heard of this before… i had no idea they called guidance counselors

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. There’s honestly you can do. Maybe it’s something simple. A confusion on your transcript, a mix up in the school report. Possibly asking them to explain an EC further. No use in worrying about iy

Thanks James  I have a LOT of EC’s (ten), so I figured they might think I’m lying lol.

Adcoms call when they are interested in you. They may want to see your first quarter grades to see if there is an upward trend. I would look at it as a good sign. You should follow up with your GC to make sure she returns the phone call.

FYI - adcoms often call GCs when they want additional information.

Thanks! That was what I was hoping  There is an upward trend, even though I had mono

@thegrant, colleges call guidance counselors all the time. Sometimes they are just trying to clarify something on the app. Sometimes they want to fish for info not on the app. Lots of GCs have professional relationships with admissions counselors (which can be a huge help, for example, for the kid who got waitlisted everywhere with no admissions in the spring…). I wouldn’t read anything into it, really, except that Cornell HAS looked at your app. :)

They wouldn’t call if they weren’t interested. They don’t call every applicant’s GC.

:-S Okay  anxious

Well, if they immediately see you are not qualified, maybe not. So you are probably right about that.

OP - Have your mother call your GC back to ask her to say some very nice things about you.

@oldfort‌ Haha okay thanks. I am just going to conclude that the adcoms wanted to know more about me as a student and person. I’ll fill y’all in tomorrow :stuck_out_tongue:

You will be just fine - no admins call a GC of a student they are not interested in. And since you are Native American, they may be calling to get tribe info, if you did not place the specific info in your app.

Thanks @awcntdb  However, I did specify my tribe on the application. :-SS

^^ I recall thread once when the person specified his tribe, but diid not include some registration number or something like that - I forgot the specifics, but the person had to send some piece of paper. In any case, an admin call is not a negative, but a positive that they are interested. Good luck!

My D’s GC got a call checking on her first quarter grades about this time her senrior year.

I switched schools mid-year ninth grade. They wanted info. about the school.

Thanks for the update - therefore, they are interested. No need to check that if they were not. Good luck.

@awcntdb thanks  My fingers are crossed!

the fact that they are calling is usually positive. They have looked at what you submitted and they are still considering you. If they had already rejected you, they would not bother to call for more info.
