Cornell Chance and ED vs. Regular

Hey CCers,

I am an international applying to Cornell and various other colleges. My question is that would it be wise to apply Cornell ED and have a higher chance of acceptance than apply regular to all the schools? I am applying to all the high reaches (MIT, Princeton, Stanford etc.) which I know is next to impossible but I still want to try. But other colleges like Cornell, I have a better chance. So should I risk it with Cornell? Since if I get accepted, I have to withdraw my other apps.

And I have pretty above average but not genius-like stats:

GPA: 9th-10th:3.9
11th boards:90%
SAT: 2230
SAT II:yet to take

ECs: FBLA, Model UN, lots of honor societies,Science Olympiad etc.
Sports: Track and Field JV
Awards: Lots of science fair awards, notably selected as national fair finalist across all of India, AP scholar award, some other academic awards....

Essays: moderate
Recs: moderate

I know Cornell is a reach but it is definitely easier than MIT and other such colleges

Another finalist? Maybe rt knows you. Did you apply this year? And any idea when the results will come? Also, whats FBLA? And which science olympiads?

The answer to your question depends to a large extent on your desperation for admission to a good US college, preparation for JEE, and maybe preference for engineering vs research. I assume you lean heavily towards research? Makes no sense to ED Cornell for me to be frank :-/ Also, your financial situation?

Finally, a reminder that high reaches are not impossible. You’re more like a usual ‘good applicant’ with no surety but a ‘chance’ ‘everywhere’ :)

haha i guess all us aspirants do the same activities. yeah i applied this year and got in. the results are out for the finalists and the fair is in november, so still some time to go. the olympiads and FBLA stuff are from when I was back in the US (moved in 11th grade). I am actually more inclined to go to US rather than IIT. I will still try for JEE and I am pretty sure with my current preparation, I can make EML. SO yeah…

Also, the reason I want to ED is because the competition for the high reaches is notoriously skilled and it is literally based on luck/chance for me. So at least with ED, I could probably secure one good college. That is my train of thought. But like I said, I dont want to withdraw all my apps in case I get acceptance. And I am ok about financial stuff. I can afford GA Tech and Purdue and the likes, but the other ones, I will probably go for aid which is good because MIT, and HP are need blind for international
And for me, I want a good engineering college mainly. So is Cornell better for research or eng?

Anyways, thanks for the info and the boost. Hopefully, I will get at least one Ivy. Good luck with your apps, dude.

Cornell is great for both research and engineering!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I’ve been rejected :frowning: Damn!! Wish I had the time to actually construct a working model…might have had a better chance that way :frowning: I’ve rarely felt so disappointed at results… **CK!

Anyways, congrats to you. What did you make?

why worry, gary? you have already got the RMO and stuff. and a nice SAT score :)

I created a novel population growth model. I think my title is the longest one in the list lol. It is the one with the atto-fox paradox in it.

Hey guys, can you also suggest any other ECs I can compete or participate in, such as debates, science fairs, and such stuff? I go to an IIT prep school and it’s really hard to get any info. Any suggestions?

It all depends on your city. Lucknow is pretty lame for instance(unless you are as good as rt) :stuck_out_tongue:
Also, Its just RMO, not even the INMO :open_mouth:

Which school are you in? Is it MPrakash/Kota or something? I’m doing coaching from Aakash Institute.

no, i am in HYD FIITJEE. and who is rt?

rt_08 another user in this forum. And I know this is a long shot, but are you by any chance the same guy who came to give APs at Paramount Global center in HYD?

no no, i have never even heard of it. what is APs?

Advance Placements

oh those APs lol i thought something else. why would someone come to india and offer AP? thats strictly collegeboard turf and if i remember, only a handful of american accredited schools in india offer APs.

oh wait sorry, i misunderstood. you meant someone came to give AP exams, right? i assume you wrote them too. I was not aware that these exams were/are offered in india. I wonder if i can still apply.

Yes, and there was a guy from HYD FIITJEE there, so I thought it might be you coz you mentioned AP scholar :P

Grammar nazi alert: please don’t say that you “give” an exam, guys! I’m sorryyyyy!

we give our sweat and sleep to our exams…what do you know of exams?

Thank you grammar nazi. Would you mind also contributing to the thread and answering my question since I do believe this is in the Colleges section and not the SAT Writing Section? :)

Me? I know a fair bit, I’d say.

Well I think you stand a good chance if you apply ED to Cornell. HYPSM are total crapshoots though, so you can’t bank on anything there.

hey wassup guys and gals…
@surfup— up and up u stand a good chance evrywhere except HYP(crapshoots)
