Cornell chances ED

I am applying to Cornell university ED to the college of engineering. I reside in India, henceforth applying as an international undergraduate. I intend to pursue computer science. So here are my stats:

SAT 1 SCORE: 2170
SAT subject test : Chemistry 800. Math level 2 800.
No APs No IB… Nothing as such offered.

Extra curricular:

  1. Computer oriented: 1). Developed an app and designed a website for a start-up. 2). Project on simulation of car (graphics project aimed at translation and rotation of car (3-d object)). 3). Another mobile app and website (just programming and design completed. A bit of work left to complete. It’s related to girl’s safety)
  2. Writing: 1). I have a blog ‘Talking Covers’ where I have published several poems, articles and stories. 2). Columnist in a local newspaper. 3). Currently writing a novel.
These are particularly two of my important ECs. Others are but not very important:
  3. Student govt. Head boy (2013-14) and sports captain (2012-13)
  4. President of Maths club (3 years)
  5. Volleyball team captain. State level runner up.

Academic achievements:

  1. Qualified for second level of International Mathematics Olympiad i.e. INMO
  2. Stood second in abacus competition held in the state.
  3. Student of the year (2014)
  4. Sports boy of the year (2013) (it doesn’t fit here, but just added it)
  5. Won around four quiz competitions but at inter-school level.
These were some important ones. Others are not that great.

Work/Job/Volunteer:

  1. I am a mathematics tutor. Teach students of class 8-10.
  2. Summer: I worked at a local hospital analysing X-ray reports and managing the accounts.
  3. As the school head boy, we organised various rallies for traffic awareness, against female foeticide and I volunteered these.
I haven’t interned elsewhere and don’t intend to do so at present.

Essays:

  1. Common App essay : Personal statement: it is about my interest in computers and I have explained how I learnt programming and coding in brief. And I breif description of a couple of my projects and designs.
  2. Additional Info: On my father’s unemployment. How it matured me and why I had to start tutoring. And I wrote about how it is entailed my to start a company and help the needy.
  3. Cornell supplemental: I speak about a project where we worked to build a helicopter which had a camera in it and could record things. I was the leader, so explained in a para how we accomplished in making it. And then how it grew my interest in engineering. And lastly about why Cornell. I collabrtaed it with Entrepreneurship@cornell. (Additional info, I have specified I want run a company).
I haven’t yet completed the additional info part. But that’s what I strive to write.
All my essays have been reviewed by mg cousin who is a Princeton undergrad and a UMich PhD student.

Teacher’s recommendation:
Counsellor: I am not sure what he will write. He won’t show it to me. Maybe I guess it to 8/10.
Teacher evaluation: 1). English teacher: its a great rec. Strong in my perspective. 9/10
2). Physics teacher: not yet written, but it is going to be good. 8/10.

I am applying for financial aid. Hopefully the TATA SCHOLARSHIP. I intend to pursue computer science. And a minor in Dyson business minor for engineers.

I am aware that I don’t stand as an ideal student here. But I think I have concentrated well on a few things and have excelled. So hoping for the best to happen. I request to put forth your opinions. I also need to specify here that I won’t be attempting for SAT again… That’s going to be my final score.

Othe colleges I apply to: Caltech early action. Princeton, rice, northwestern and maybe university of Virginia or Purdue to add to the list.

I thank you for you time and kindness… Thanks for your opinions. And should you need any more details, I’ll add.

ECs look impressive.

Two quick questions:
for SAT1, what is your CR + M score? You can check that score against the SAT stats that cornell has here: http://irp.dpb.cornell.edu/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Profile2014-Freshmen.pdf

What is your GPA? Just one more stat thats pretty important in a Chance Me

I forgot to add my GPA. We were offered GPA till 10th grade only… So in 9th and 10th it was: 10/10. In 11th no GPA given. But class rank is : 6/175 at present…
And SAT division if scores is : Math 800. Writing 720. Critical reading 650.

Then UVA and Purdue won’t likely be affordable. They don’t give FA to int’ls.

Does university of Maryland in college park offer financial aid to int’l

I’m also applying ED. I think that fact that you’re Indian will really help. Colleges love to accept under-represented minorities. As for your test scores they are really good. That’s where I am lacking, but I make up for it with amazing ECs and Recommendations. My GPA is also 4.1 and I am class rank 2/150. I think you have a really good chance of getting in, good luck!

By the way: I am about to take the Chemistry SAT II
How is it? Is it really hard?

To islandmg, Indian is not URM. In fact it is considered a disadvantage. 2170 is low for Cornell, but oh well you don’t want to fix it. I don’t particularly like your odds, especially since you are an international applicant.

@Islandmg … I haven’t yet taken the chemistry test but it is easy. Maybe because Math and chemistry are my strengths. I find them easy…

@jarrett211 … I know they are lesss. But can I compensate elsewhere… Like my ECs or recs or anywhere else?

@Ankitdesai Hey I know this hasn’t been touched in a year, but I was wondering if you got into Cornell? I’m applying ED this year haha
