Found an organization, a club, president of one and some other minor stuff.

Job/Work Experience: volunteer at state hospital
Summer Activities: studies Neuroscience on Harvard online course, Middle East politics on Boston University’s online course
Essays: Hmm, common App I would give myself 8/10. My Eng teacher loves it though. My Cornell essay is probably 9/10. I love it, probably one of the essays that I write with my heart.
Teacher Recommendation: 10/10 - my history teacher adores me. And the other one is 6-7/10, pretty generic. Haven’t read it but she doesn’t know me well.
Counselor Rec: haven’t read.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes!!!
Intended Major: Literature… Haha, that’s what I put but I think I will major in Government/Politics or Psychology alongside as well
State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey
Country (if international applicant): USA. But i’m a F-1 international student. Come to US 2 years ago.
School Type: Private catholic. A bad school that only have 3-5 people got into Ivy League in 100 years. Our average SAT score is 1200, way below national standard.
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: XX
Income Bracket: very, very low. Gonna need a lot of aid.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Hmmm, probably an anti-hook since I’m asian but I think my love for literature really show me who I am.

Reflection: CONGRATS TO ALL WHO GOT IN! I’m still waiting for financial aid. If I don’t get enough I will have to withdraw from the school :frowning:

Strengths: essays, SAT, some of my ECs, recommendations,
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: LITERATURE!!! Can I just say I am so obsessed with novels, writing, books in general and I show that even though I learn English only for 3 years ago I love reading Shakespeare
Weaknesses: hmmm, tepid awards. I did not win anything major or big. My minor writing essay awards probably show my love for writing though
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Probably mah essay  and my ECs page

Additional info section was about the passing of my father sophomore year and how it has affected my financial situation. I pay my own tuition and my mom has had to take up 2 jobs.

Summer Activities: COSMOS UCSD, CS61A at UC Berkeley
Essays:
Common App: 9/10 (wrote about collaboration),

Cornell Supplement: 7/10, in hindsight it appeared manufactured, I talked about tree recursion and Python functions. Fun stuff, but I think it came off as insincere, even though it really wasn’t

Teacher Recommendation: 10/10 Physics and Calc Teacher, 9/10 AP Language and Composition Teacher. I know both of them really well.
Counselor Rec: 10/10
Additional Rec:
Interview: It was mediocre. The interviewer was somewhat aggressive, even though it was supposed to be a casual interview and not evaluative at all.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Computer Science
State (if domestic applicant): California
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Asian (rip)
Gender: Male (double rip)
Income Bracket: <75k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Computer Science focused ECs? Probably not because I got rejected.

Reflection
Eh, I guess the AdComs didn’t like me. My supplement probably came off as braggadocios, because I talked about things that the AdComs probably didn’t understand, like tree recursion, big O notation, efficiency of functions and what not. Oh well, it just wasn’t meant to be.

I would say, if you’re looking at this wondering how to get in, do not try to hard sell yourself. Just be honest, and the AdComs will either like you or not. That’s all there is to it. You have to be vulnerable to the AdComs, so they see you as a real person and resonate with you. Ofc, you should have a good GPA, and over a 33 on ACT or over 2200 on the SAT. That would give you the best chance.

Strengths: Test scores, CS Focused ECs,
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: CS knowledge, Intuitive student
Weaknesses: Too many. GPA, No major awards, Asian Male in Computer Science, Being too Lit for Cornell.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Weaknesses
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nowhere yet, although I’m applying to 24 schools in total. I’m bound to get into a few good ones, so there are no worries.
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application:
CS Knowledge, Interest in Engineering.

I’m still in shock. I know my stats aren’t perfect, but there was a lot more I don’t want to type out. I can’t believe I wasn’t deferred, just straight up rejected. This college admissions thing is way harder than I thought! I was a great fit. Applied to CALS from a rural location.

Essays: not bad. One about Peru, when I had to bring a sick infant to the hospital from the home in a sketchy bus and navigate by myself for 3+ hours while attempting to understand Spanish and to keep the baby from screaming too much. The other specifically about why I loved ILR so much, mock trial, my dad’s an employment lawyer so I’m interested in employment law, etc.
Teacher Recommendation: French teacher (had her since 6th grade, 7 years, and traveled on a school trip to Quebec. She talked about my International Relations interests and how I picked up Spanish last year, the only other language my school offers), AP Gov/AP US teacher (mayor of my town, attended Harvard, had him for 2 years, he has very differing beliefs than me and we debate a lot, so he discussed my interest in politics), and my neighbor (professor at Syracuse University who I discuss politics a lot with as well, talked about me from a professor’s point of view)

Strengths: Essay, while it had NOTHING to do with my intended major, I hope they liked it. It really discussed my passions as an individual rather than as a student, and a lot of it focused on the hectic day trying to keep the underclassmen calm and levelheaded as Student Gov’t leaders after our small town was rocked by a sophomore’s suicide which coincided with the date we planned pep rally (it was pretty rough for everyone).
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Love teaching, and bossin’ people around is pretty cool sometimes (when I know what I’m doing ~25% of the time)
Weaknesses: Just another Asian Male with high test scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My stellar essays ofc, jk idk really I wasn’t expecting anything when I checked it. Maybe my brother helped a bit.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Didn’t EA anywhere
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: GET TO KNOW THE COLLEGE AND JUST EXUDE YOUR LOVE YOU REGULAR DECISION APPLICANTS. ALL HAIL BIG RED. OUR LORD AND/OR SAVIOR

SAT II: N/A (ILR does not want them)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): ~3.75
Weighted: 4.14
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 13 as of middle of Junior Year, but definitely more around 15-17 by the time I applied
AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 Eng. Lang. and Comp., 4 USH, 3 AP Physics (1/2), 2 Macroecon (just took the test without taking the class to see how I do)
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics C, AP Calculus BC, AP English Lit. and Comp., AP Statistics, H Engineering electives (2) for the engineering program that I’m in at my high school, CP Graphic Design, Gym
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Not a single one ahaha

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Rampage-School Newspaper (News Editor), Robotics (Team Co-Captain and President), Class Council (President Freshman and Junior years), Public Policy Group (Founder and President)
Job/Work Experience:
Campaign Fellow for a House of Representatives campaign

Intern for a Senator Cory Booker
Volunteer/Community service:
Holiday Festival (event school does for disadvantaged students in a nearby town) yearly
Local Nursing Home Volunteer (150+ hours)
Summer Activities: See Job/Work Experience
Essays:
Spent a lot of time on both my Common App and supplemental. Def. call the admissions office for the school you’re applying to, the officer I spoke to told me that they don’t like to see essays over 250 words (the word limit wasn’t stated for ILR).
Common App essay: Focused on my internship with the senator and how even though I was the only high schooler, no one could see the difference. Focus on work ethic, and then I also talked about my first congressional campaign and how that had a profound impact on the more personal side of me.
Supplemental: Focused on ILR and my fit with it. How ILR wasn’t trying to force me to do anything unlike the 4 years of my high school career (I thought I wanted to be an engineer so I’ve been in the UP program ever since). Also talked about the Public Policy Group and just in general showed my ambition.
Teacher Recommendation: Junior year history teacher and also advisor for class council; She liked me so I think she wrote a great essay & Soph. year english teacher (but she also was advisor for the newspaper); Def a 10/10, she loved me and I loved her so it was great
Counselor Rec: Prob better than most public school counselor recs., but she def didn’t have a lot of time to just focus on mine.
Additional Rec: 10/10; couldn’t be more grateful, I think this might have been the biggest factor
It was the candidate for the first campaign I worked on. He did an amazing job on it, and it literally left goosebumps on my arms
Interview: Went really well, we connected politically which I think was huge. (risky tactic, talking about politics, but it was def. a great conversation if anything)

Reflection

Strengths: Extracurriculars and Recs (and SAT)
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Just focus on my fit and tried to show them my ambition and my work ethic
Weaknesses: While my GPA was good, only reason it was so high was bc I took all H electives and AP’s my whole HS career (besides a Spanish 3 CPE I took soph. year). My grades Junior year were just cringe-worthy; 4 b’s and mainly A-
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: They saw my passion and ambition, and I hope that they saw that even though I put getting good grades and excelling academically below a lot of things, I excel at doing things in real life. My rec from the candidate for Congress was beyond amazing.
And while they prob get a lot of people who have great internships and jobs, I think they noticed that everything I did, I did myself. I used none of my parent’s connections or stuff like that, so they saw that I used my connections to build who I am and who I plan to be.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: None
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: My ambition and my passion for politics.

OTHERS: Ahahaha yes those events prior gave me high blood pressure consistently. I won’t say don’t think about them bc you’re definitely going to, so here’s my experiences with that:

  1. Updated financial aid portal?
Nope; last time I checked it still said initiated
  2. They didn’t ask, but I sent them as soon as I got them (November 20th)
  3. No, my self-service portal was still functioning (even when some people’s on CC couldn’t on decision day)
  4. ILR doesn’t do interviews, but I did get an interview with an alum in my town

I never posted, more stalked the Class of 2020 page, but huge thanks to everyone out there. It was such a helpful and positive community, and I hope future threads are just great.

I am more than willing to help anybody who has any questions, and I didn’t put some things on this for security purposes, but please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have ANY questions. My email is dominicllim@gmail.com, so feel free.

Essays: I thought my essays couldn’t have been better. I had many people I really trust (one of whom has written and published a book and one of whom is a teacher at a really prestigious private high school) edit them. I’ve always been a very good writer and my essays were creative and my language command is quite good. I would say 9.5/10.

Supplements: For DEA (Design and Environmental Analysis) you have to do a 3-part design challenge. I spent 30+ hours on it and I thought I put everything I had into it. I thought it was really unique and I know I did the best I could on it.

Teacher Recommendation: I got 3:

Reflection

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself:
-I really focused on the DEA program and how it fits perfectly with my identity. I definitely sounded like the embodiment of the department - or at least that’s what I thought

Weaknesses: My ACT could be better and I didn’t report my SAT because I got a 1970 and I didn’t take subject tests because human ecology doesn’t require them. Also, my GPA isn’t perfect.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I did the best in school my freshmen and sophomore year and last year I didn’t do as well (I got 3 B’s). I think they didn’t accept me because they want to see how I do this semester and because they want to see the other design projects that regular decision applicants will send in.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I have only heard back from University of Minnesota (accepted to school of engineering) and Kansas University (Accepted)

Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: My project and the fact that I am pursuing my a combination of my two passions (science and design)

P.S.: Being deferred is really rough. The waiting will kill you.

Essays: I’d say 9/10 for common app and maybe 8/10 for my supplement. Common app was about flying across the country alone and learning to be independent, supplement basically talked all about why I loved Cornell and why I thought it was the best fit for me.
