Thank you all so much for your time!

Your SATs and ec’s seem find but that GPA will HURT you

If it was not because of your freshman year fiasco, I would have told you that with that GPA you had no chance. But you should be ok!

Hey, thanks guys for your comments!

I’d say you have a decent shot but then again you have an awfully low GPA for cornell. Someone mentioned freshman year but i don’t see any imfo about it. Great extra curics – i hope it will be enough.
Chance back if you have the time?

@bhattacharjoo I hate to break it to you, but those SAT 2 scores aren’t particularly high. I actually have never met anyone with an SAT score in the 500s or lower. Anything is possible, so I would recommend applying, but you really would need to pull up that SAT score (ideally) 600-700 points to be more competitive. Look into some lower-tiered schools, there’s plenty of good ones.

OP, all your stats are great except for your GPA. There aren’t many AP scores, but I’m going to assume that’s because your high school doesn’t have many AP classes. Your extracurriculars also look great and have a consistent theme. I wouldn’t be surprised if you made it. Good luck!

I do think you have a decent chance but don’t use SwalaBala’s statement to estimate your chance of admission. The majority of Asians with 4.0 gpas and 2200+ sats DON’T get in and clearly something must have stood out in his application because people rarely get accepted with stats like that.

You’ve interned and worked in China. Pretty impressive. Colleges love impressive, but how do these internships play a role in your goals/passions and contribution to the schools? You should answer this when applying in the “any last comments?” Section of your Common App. What’s so scary about admissions is that you never know. It’s hard to chance anyone. Going to China definitely stood out to me, and hopefully it does to Cornell.

Guys, keep in mind that he’s applying for the Hotel school… That’s a complete different story than Cornell’s other schools.

The Hotel School looks more for fit than hard stats. They look for experience, enthusiasm, and how fit you are for the school.

I don’t think the GPA will hold you back considering you’re applying to the Hotel school. And besides, your internships at hotels will definitely help your case for your fit, ESPECIALLY since you interned at a hotel in China.

Your SAT is OUTSTANDING.

Your ECs are good.

And I don’t think the Asian thing will affect you TOO much since I don’t think many Asians apply to the Hotel school anyway.

But if you’re REALLY paranoid, I’d look into up the Cornell Class 2019 RD results and look at the kids who got into the Hotel school. You’ll notice looking through the thread that there are VERY few kids who apply for Hotel. And many of them don’t have stellar stats. You’re definitely above average for stats for those applying to Hotel. But look it up and see for yourself.

I would like to know more info about this as well. bump.

where are you from?

Thank you for chancing my thread! From what I see, I believe the variety of hospitality-related experiences and strong academic achievement would definitely qualify you as a student in SHA. Go for it!

@litlhoward2468 Hey! From his previous posts, looks like he’s from New York.

Apply. Hotel Admin. is one of those schools at Cornell that sometimes admit students with lower stats but amazing ec’s dedicated to their interest. Of course GPA matters but your scores are excellent and anything is possible, trust me: )

I already chanced you but again i’d say you have a shot but it may be a long one. Hopefully Cornell will excuse your fairly low GPA becasue clearly you do a lot outside of school. Your scores help you so I’d be surprised if you got in but not astonished. By the way what were your friends stats?

@laphysica, he’s applying to hotel school, not the other schools. Not many people are familiar with SHA. Their 75th percentile SAT is a 1480 and GPA is around a 3.5UW for the hotel school. Their main focus is on EC’s and fit for the school, not especially grades.

And regarding my friend’s stats, I’ll find out the exact one for you.

Hey laphysica, you there?

I would think that your scores and EC make up for your GPA. As long as your essays are top-notch, you have a decent chance of getting in.
