Cornell Class of 2021 Guaranteed Transfer Discussion Thread

I’m a little confused. Should we complete the “recommended” courses if we want to be competitive transfer applicants? I plan on transferring sophomore year, and I doubt I’d be able to complete the recommended coursework along with all the requirements. Can anyone clarify?

@forest2021 I think it can work out pretty well for you then! sounds like good news. The major requirements within HumEc aren’t all that different, so I’ll try and figure it out, I guess.

@43563468 I think the general principle I’ve decided to apply here is better safe than sorry. Of course, it’s nice that we have priority, but I don’t want to risk anything.

@cricketfan Yes, my admission notice was exactly like that. The day after, I received an email titled “Cornell College of Human Ecology Transfer Option”. It consisted of Frequently Asked Questions (specific to HumEc TO) and a link to the HumEc transfer option website. The website had more detailed information regarding the TO schedule, my specific major requirements, and the TO Response Form in which you accept or deny the offer (due May 15, 2017). If anything, I’m assuming your email is just lagging.

Hey everyone!! (: I just made a CC account, I got the TO to ILR and it’s my dream school so I’ll definitely be pursuing this opportunity. (:
@forest2021 hi!! I’m also planning to attend UC Davis for my freshmen year!! I’m going to the decision day on April 8th and I’m planning on gathering a bunch of questions to ask the counselors they have there or whoever available that can possibly help, I do feel really awkward though telling them about the TO but at the same time I really just want to get the courses l have to take cleared up so I’m not sure yet on how to approach that.
@tocollege182 hi! also guys so I was doing some research and because the UC’s are on a quarter system that may contribute to making things more difficult. I’m not too sure about this though but I’ll look more into it, let me know if you guys know anything about that.
@cricketfan hello! (: I also am an ILR TO and still haven’t received anything so I think we just have to wait, hopefully we’ll get all our details soon though.

@tocollege182 - Thanks. Your message puts my mind to rest.

@jesuslover2021 - I am also in California, but I plan on completing the required courses at a Community College and save some money because Cornell might not give a lot of financial aid and I don’t want my parents to take on too much debt. We are not rich but I won’t qualify for any need based scholarship either.
Like I have mentioned elsewhere, another reason of going to a CC is because getting the support from the student adviser and professors will be a lot easier at a CC. I am already 1 year into the CC program so I will also be able to get an Associate’s Degree - whatever it’s worth.

I will post here as soon as I hear something back from ILR.

@jesuslover2021 Hi glad you can join us! Asking the counselors at admit day about the TO is a really good idea, I never thought about doing that. I originally wasn’t planning on going to UCSD’s Triton Day, but now I see some benefit. If you could pls let us know what you find out that’d be really appreciated. If I end up going, I’ll do the same.

I also read about the difficulty of transferring quarter credits to semester credits, and I’m sincerely hoping we don’t run into any problems. I’m assuming (hopelessly) that, given the volume of students who attend UCs, Cornell can accomodate and is already familiar w transfer students from the UC system (although it could very easily be that my perspective is skewed, given that I live in CA).

@jesuslover2021 I’ll be at Davis’s admit day too! I think I’m also just going to go ahead and ask questions about my TO requirements even though I feel it’ll be awkward. I just have too many questions that I can’t find the answers of online! I, too, will share anything I learn here.

@tocollege182 Yeah I’m also a little worried about how the quarter credits to semester credits will pan out. I’m hoping once Cornell sends out more support to the TO candidates they can answer all our questions.

@cricketfan Yeah no I completely get you! I was thinking of going to my local community college too for that same reason but I think as of right now I’m just leaning more toward Davis. And I’ll be posting too!
@tocollege182 And yeah definitely! We’re all on the same journey right now. And yes! Hopefully it will still be a smooth process with the quarter system.
@forest2021 Yay that’s awesome!! We’re literally in the same boat haha. But yeah I think we should, just to get a lot straightened out and the sooner the better because I know we still have to get the courses we take approved by Cornell so we really have to be on top of our game. Also it’s a good thing that we stay ahead so that way when registration comes out we’re able to try our best in assuring we get the classes we need.

Hey all, I also got offered the TO to CALS for the Animal Science major.

@forest2021, I’ll be attending UC Davis too! I’ll be at Decision Day at UCD this weekend

@soulsurfer99 @jesuslover2021 Yay!! Nice to have a few of us all in the same boat. It’s great that we can all support each other in Davis.

@forest2021 Good point, I’ve read that the indv Cornell colleges are known to be really helpful too.

@jesuslover2021 I’m really glad a lot us are in similar circumstances, I hope we can keep this network going!

I’ll also post here when I hear back from the ILR school

Question- how many people receive the TO desicion

I was offered the TO for ILR; I have not received any more information in regards to transferring either. I am planning on attending my second choice school to fulfill the requirements needed to transfer. In the end, I’m very thankful!

@SamE123 It varies by eage college; from the information Cornell gave me, “169 out of more than 2100” HumEc applicants received the TO

Found a pretty insightful article written by a Cornell GT in 2016

My S already did this, to ILR. They gave great guidance (as much help as you ask for freshman year).
They also said if you can’t take one of the classes at your freshman campus, no big deal, do the best you can. Just get most of them in and get those grades !

Just be sure that the school you are accepted to is what you’ll want to study.
While feasible, not desirable to transfer colleges within Cornell after soph year.

They had a fairly similar orientation for transfers like freshmen when my son started
(which is less than many other colleges).

@blevine that’s really nice and comforting to read! Did your son choose to go his second choice school for his first year? or a community college? How did he deal with having the transfer option in a social sphere? In previous threads, GT students have mentioned the “ethical dilemma” of attending a different college knowing they are going to transfer out.

My D got a transfer offer from SHA. Has anyone received anything from SHA since Ivy Day or know the transfer requirements?
