Cornell College of Arts and Sciences - Chance Me

Hi everyone!

I plan on applying this fall to Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences as a Performance and Media Studies major. Chance me please!

GPA: unweighted 3.1 (IK very low..Horrible freshman year, sophomore and junior are better so upward curve.)
ACT: 33
Subject Tests: 700 US history, 750 literature. 750 math 1
APs: 3 US History, 5 English Literature and Composition
Senior APs: English Language, Calculus AB, Psychology, Art History

Great extra-curriculars such as national writing and acting awards. Great essays and recommendations. I'm also a Black male.

Despite my awful GPA, do you think I have a chance?

Comments, anyone?

Your GPA is much lower than Cornell’s standards, and affirmative action can only do so much. Your scores and EC’s are good but i don’t know if they’ll make up for your GPA. Of course you have a chance, and you should definitely still apply! If Cornell is your first choice, i would recommend doing ED. Cornell: Reach

You have a shot! Affirmative action ftw.

High reach, even though you’re benefited by URM, there’s tons of black kids out there with 4.0s and 2300+

Being a black male helps, but your GPA is really low and so many competitive people apply to A&S that the AA benefit decreases greatly with the GPA because as far as admissions knows, that could be a reflection on your work ethic. If you can’t get a high gpa in high school, how will you do in college? So Cornell would be a high reach.

@JanAnna‌ would the improvement help, though? I had a 2.5 freshman year, then a 3.5 soph and jr in much harder classes. My weighted GPA is also much higher, more like a 3.4.
Regardless I’d agree Cornell is a high reach. I just want to make sure it’s even worth applying to.

@theaterdoe‌ Having an upward trend is better than consistently earning low grades, but there’s just so many other people that maintained consistently high gpas that you’d still be at a disadvantage because of that. You’re better off than someone that kept getting low marks but based on the competition for students applying to Cornell, you’re still not in a desirable position, honestly.

Ooo idk how relevant this is but my AP scores aren’t official yet - they’re just estimates based off my subject test scores, how much I studied for them, and how I performed in the classes. I will know my scores in a few weeks.

not a common major. combined w affirmative action you have a chance, but id still put it as a reach
