Just wondering for those of you applying to Cornell through CommonApps, what other forms(besides Teacher Rec, School Report, Midyear Report which are handled by your school) must you submit by mail? I believe there's a Cornell Essay form ( http://admissions.cornell.edu/application/CU-supplements.cfm ) as well, but is Part 1 Form necessary? I thought everything you fill up in Part 1 is already filled up in the CommonApp itself.

Part 1 sets up your online account and some other administrative stuff that cornell needs before everything up, so yes you do need Part 1.

But isn't that already provided on the main page of the CommonApp itself?

They want Part 1 before you ever submit the CommonApp or send in teacher recs, etc. It is mainly used to start your file.

Part 1 is in the supplements section of the CommonApp.

I sent in that supplement, and haven't recieved any sort of confirmation e-mail about it.

Just wondering, is it normal that I haven't yet recieved an e-mail confirmation?

So do I need to send in the Part 1 if I am applying by CommonApps online?

Or rather, did you guys send in Part 1 by post despite having submitted your app(including the Supplement) through CommonApp online?

if u send it in by post as well as send in the app and supp online wouldn't that be redundant?.........u would have sent in part 1 twice

The supplement and part 1 are completely different. Part 1 has you fill out your name, address, etc, and then the college you are applying to, along with the $65 application fee. Part 2 is your essays, and again restating which college you are applying to, and letting you change from your part 1 if you feel like it. So yes, they are both important.

If you're applying online, you first fill out part 1, which can be found in the supplement tab on commonapp.org. With this, you send (either online through credit card or by mailing a check) the application fee and this is processed. While doing this, you give your recommendations to the recommenders and give the Secondary School Report and Mid-Year Report to your guidance couselor/principal/whoever does that and have them fill those out and mail off separately. Then, you fill out everything on the common app online and submit that. You then take the essays form and answer both essats, print it out (be sure to include your SSN somewhere on all sheets attached) and mail that out separately. BTW, you can do that all in any order you want, but you should send do part 1/supplement and pay the fee first. That step allows you to create an online account at Cornell's website.

Bottom line:

You must fill out Part 1 and send it via mail (cannot be done on line).

You can mail the check with Part 1, or pay on line at CommonApp.org

You can submit the Common App on line.

You must submit Part 2 (essay supplement) and it can only be sent by mail. The address to mail to is different than for Part 1.

All mailings must be postmarked by 1/1/05.

I believe the supplement for Cornell found at commonapps.org is the same as what you see in Part 1. So, as someone has rightly pointed out, it's not necessary to mail in Part 1 by post if you're submitting your app via Commonapps.

Just to enlighten those applying via commonapps who remain in the dark : Fill up everything in the Commonapps(including supplement) and just mail the following by post - School Report, Midyear Report, 2 Teacher Evaluations, Essays form and the International Form 1A(applicable for internationals only).

Thanks to all who responded anyway.

Part 1 CAN be done online. Under the supplements tab, the supplement there for Cornell IS Part 1. Next to it is a link to pay the application fee. The only things that need to be mailed are the essay form and the forms given to recommenders/guidance counselor.

towerpumpkin wrote "Part 1 CAN be done online."

towerpumpkin, you are correct. I made the "mistake" of following the instructions at the Cornell web site that state it can only be mailed in.

wow, why cant the short answers be submitted online?? thats bs. someone needs to teach cornell how to put essay fields on their damn common app supplement. GET WITH THE PROGRAM, CORNELL.

To be honest, I don't think there's a messier app around for Commonapp than Cornell's among the Ivies (at least, those I'm applying to)!

It's ridiculous the different forms you need to submit by post despite filing your app online! To top it off, you even need to know where - yes, they have 2 addresses for that - to send your Part 1A to, depending on whether you have submitted Part 1!
