Hi, I am trying to figure out if Cornell has a different system then most schools. As I understand it when I send in my Cornell app I will also be applying for the Computer Science program. Is that correct?
Also, does the computer science department have more competitive admissions then the other departments, if so do we have any data on by how much?
When you apply to Cornell, you don’t apply to a specific major. You apply to a specific school within the college (i.e. Engineering, Arts and Sciences, ILR, etc.) I believe you list 2-3 preferences for your school choices (i.e. 1: Engineering, 2: Arts and Sciences). Computer Science is offered in both Engineering and Arts and Sciences, the only difference is getting a Bachelor of Science in the Engineering school or a Bachelor of Arts in the Arts school.
You can put your intended major as anything on your ap. You don’t affiliate to a major in Cornell until (usually) your sophomore year, once you’ve taken the prereq courses.
Not sure about the stats for admission, but Cornell usually accepts ~14% of students. Engineering is usually the school that takes a considerably low amount of students.
