Cornell Deferred 2022

Is it true that most ED applicants are more qualified than RD applicants?

@BobSagets I think so and Iā€™ve heard this from many people. It may be because they had solid grades/ ecs/ standardized test scores/ etc. by Nov. 1st while most of their peers are still in the works for those things.

I also feel like deferrals are Cornellā€™s way of wanting to give RD applicants a fair chance to get in since they do only have limited spots and if they accept so many applicants from ED their RD acceptance rate is going to heavily go down.

Iā€™m praying, but my class is the most competitive one in a couple years at my school. I know many people applying RD, so Iā€™m looking for slivers of hope

Hi guys! Iā€™m here if you need someone to make you feel better with a completely useless piece of information (:

Hey guys, I got deferred from CALS Biological Sciences. I was obviously very disappointed last night, but looked at the bright side: I didnā€™t get rejected! There is a reason for this. We may not have fit perfectly for ED admission, but we can definitely fix that for RD. Letā€™s keep this going until April, with tips from each other Iā€™m sure many of us can reach an acceptance. Although I am unable to find exact stats, Iā€™ve heard over and over again that many ED deferrals reach admission or Guaranteed Transfer. I am planning on adding a supplemental outlining again why this school specifically is my dream, and also how I would fit and give back to society at Cornell. If you do not submit supplemental information, it may seem like you lack interest in the university, post-deferral. Unlike the other Ivys, Cornell only defers around 20% of the applicant pool, so keep that in mind. I am not a URM or a female, and my parents are well off, so this may have contributed to my deferral. Iā€™ve seen people post stats much less than mine who are URMā€™s and have been accepted. Although this is discouraging, itā€™s just how it isā€“no point brooding. Just remember that Cornell knows they are our top pick, and if we reach out to them and add information to your application, we have a good chance of acceptance. If anyone has any questions or tips please post as I cannot find a lot of information online regarding Cornell deferred applications.

I read somewhere that admissions officers just think its weird if you send them poems/songs/etc. but I also read that a guy drew a picture book and got off of waitlist. Do you guys think that doing something eccentric is a good idea? I think its a risk tbh at this point.

@bearerer12 I am a URM and I was deferred from CALS (Biometry and Statistics). I had a 1500 SAT and 3.89 GPA (4.0 in STEM classes). I was lowkey surprised and upset when I was deferred yesterday. I wasnā€™t expecting that at all. I donā€™t think they really fill out quotas in ED because about the same proportions of women, URM, and others are accepted in RD. I think that is only really for athletes. I am going to call and ask why I was deferred. The only reasons I can think of was that I go to a really competitive school where my SAT score is around average and I am not from NY state. Maybe my supplement could be a little stronger. Maybe I seemed disinterested. I honestly donā€™t know. This is the problem with being deferred.

Please let us know if they tell you why you were deferred. Iā€™d love to call too! @ghfroax

Hi guys, I was also deferred:( I applied to the College of Arts and Sciences, 31 ACT, 4.2 GPA, 2nd in my class, pretty strong extracurriculars/leadership positions/work experience, and my essays were about very personal experiences that I feel made me stand out and caught their attention. Iā€™m a Jewish female so I donā€™t know if that fills any kind of quota or not for them. But anyways, I had called to see why I was deferred and they said they donā€™t give out that information because it would take too long to look back and do that for everyone who asks, they did however send me a follow up email stating that they were impressed with me, however there are limited spaces early decision. They also included advice for what I can do for regular decision, such as sending in supplements. I was crushed at first that I didnā€™t get in but the email and this forum helps, keep your heads up everyone, sending you the best of luck this spring!!

Has anyone tried calling ILR? Planning on doing it after school tomorrow with my guidance counselor and will keep yā€™all posted!

Also, anyone know anything about ILR (or any other school)'s rolling policy? Thereā€™s not too much recent stuff.

Has anyone contacted AAP about their deferral?

Should we be sending in deferral letter and more letters of rec? I want to higher my chances but I donā€™t want to go through all that struggles to end up getting rejected lol. For letter of rec tho how do we turn it in again through common app since its closed already ahh

Hey yā€™all. I was deferred from CALS. I honestly thought I was going to be rejected though. I have a 1430 SAT, 31 ACT, 720 SAT II for Biology M, and a 700 SAT II for World history. My GPA is not that high though, its only a 4.0 weighted. I did think my supplemental essay was really good. Did anyone else get deferred from CALS?

@maxxx31 Me! Bio Sci major. I have a 34 ACT, 4.21 GPA, no SAT subject tests. I think the weakest part of my app was probably my ECā€™s. Iā€™ve done a lot of stuff, but nothing that screams SCIENCE.

@Bella2018 I applied for Bio Sci major too and I totally relate! The only thing that Iā€™ve done with science is take advanced science courses and thatā€™s really it. I shouldā€™ve joined more science clubs/competed in science comps :/. I really donā€™t think Iā€™m gonna get into Cornell RD now.

Oh wow we really are in the same boat. Nice to know Iā€™m not alone (: @maxxx31

Is it more effective to call alone or call with a guidance counselor?

@BobSagets I actually talked to my guidance counselor about this yesterday! She said that itā€™d make more of an impact on the admissions officers if the student calls and advocates for themselves, rather than a guidance counselor. Whatā€™s the number, anyone know?

@cerenajade Iā€™m calling the one listed in the deferral letter
