Cornell...do i have a chance?

Hi, im new to CC...but im definitely interested in going to Cornell! I think ill be applying under the Early Decision...but still...here is my overall record. Could you please tell my chances of getting in. I'll appreciate it! Thanks.

Ok here we go....
I am junior, attending the International School of Prague. I have 60 students in my class, and Im probably in the top 10. By the way, I am Canadian/Czech/Korean, so I will be applying as an international student.

My high school GPA is approx 3.9 (unweighted), and I also take full IB (3 High level classes, 3 standard level classes) THey say its the most challanging international program for students.

My SAT scores---[SAT I] CR: 660, M: 700, W:720. SAT II (Bio M): 780, SAT II (Math L2): 770.

I do a lot of extracurriculars---I play varsity soccer and softball (was captain for both seasons), vice president of the National Honor Society, head of logistics in student council, a member of the Reaccredidation program (its a procedure that my school had to undergo this year), was on Habitat for Humanity... where we built refugee homes in eastern Europe ( I also did a personal project where i raised money for the organization), i'm in the jazz ensemble (trombone) and in the concert ensemble, won three 1st place awards (10th-12th grade) at the International Speech and Debate Competition, member of MUN (in St. Petersburg), High Honor awards (9th-12th grade), History Scholastic Award (9th gr), and hopefully the Biology Scholastic Award.

Next year, I hope to be president of the nat'l honor society, vice-president/president of Student council, and captain + MVP of soccer and softball. I will also continue doing those other activities mentioned above.

I want to apply to the college of Human Ecology, and maybe major in Human Biology Health & Society. Eventually, i want to go to medical school and become a doctor! Or...i might do something with biology/policy/law (ish).

Oh yeah, I might apply for the Financial Aid....will that decrease my chances of getting in?

Well, there you go. Any helpful hints/suggestions would be awesome! THANK YOU!!!

Your GPA is awesome and the IB rigor will definitely help. It doesn't matter if you apply for aid or not (It shouldn't affect your chances at Cornell). Try to raise your SAT scores a bit (SAT IIs are fine).

Your ECs seem to be all over the place, try to show a passion.

I think you'll be fine.

wait...if you're applying as an international student, finaid might actually matter. admission is not need-blind for international students, which means you might not have as good a chance as those who don't apply for aid. sorry.

what college are you applying to?

What do you mean by Canadian/Czech/Korean? Triracial? that's very interesting...
Good luck!

Thank you Milki for your wonderful advice!!! I love your name...similar to mine! Where are you applying to? Cornell? I know you said that i should improve my SAT I scores ( i agree) ...but...its just so hard! CR is my problem...but the funny thing is, im a good english student at school, so it just doesn't make sense! I know people say i should review vocab lists, prefixes + roots...etc....but it's just so irritating, you know? How else could i improve my CR score? Do you have any suggestions? What did you do?

Hi Platero!!! So...financial aid might affect me eh? Oh well. I'll still apply!!! But yes, I am Canadian/Czech/Korean! I know, I know...bizarre! I was born in Canada (i have a Canadian passport), both my parents immigrated to Canada when they were young....but my dad is originally Czech, and my mom is originally Korean. I speak English, Czech and French (ive been learning it at school for a long time).
I think i will be applying to the College of Human Ecology, or Arts and Sciences...im not quite sure. I want to pursue a career in medicine, so Human Biology Health & Society will be major. I could also just major in biology...but the thing I also want to do something with policy/law. Did you apply to Cornell? What college?

hello dearest. well, u already know what i think- YOU ARE GETTING IN FO SHO! and then i'll go to williams and we'll meet in NYC and drink soy lattes and eat knishes... ahhhh. life will be good!

Yes, I applied to CoE this year. I'm also an international student^^ that's why I knew about the influence of aid.

Yes Milka I want to apply to Cornell too!!!! Yes our names are similar :)

I suggest "The Official SAT Question of the Day". Once you register it emails you a SAT question every day. Also try some of the prep books (Kaplan, Princeton Review, Barrons or even better the Official Collegeboard book often called "The Blue Books" which has REAL SATs)

Just take the Practice Tests

Good Luck

Hi Platero...glad to hear you are also an international student! So, im not sure if i understood correctly, but, did you get accepted to Cornell, or are you still waiting? Congrats if you did! What do you think Cornell looks for most in students?? I know, weird question...but I just want to know how Cornell's admission process is 'unique' or different from the other ivy leagues. My biggest worry is my SATS!!!! How did you do on them?

The Stats on College Board a bit outdated

Milki, thanks for the advice! Funny...i do have those SAT questions of the day sent to me...i answer them everyday...but i still feel unprepared. How did you do on your SATS? Do you think that if I get a 650 on CR, a 700 in math, and a 720 in writing...will i be in a good position for admittance...SAT-wise?

I didn't take the SATs yet (I'm a Freshmen, I know pretty pathetic to be lurking around on College Confidential).

However I did really bad on my PSAT (170, which translates to 1700). However our Biology teacher has stated that every IB Student in our schools becomes a NMSF (meaning a PSAT score of 223, SAT score of around 2230). So I'm not worried really.

Isn't that lower than what you have ? I would suggest adding something like 100 points overall (for the total combined) would put you in a good position.

Oh wow! You see, in my school we can only take the PSATS in our junior year (this year!). Hence, ive only been preparing for SATS since September....this is probably why i am so nervous. What do you want to major in?

I want to double major in Bioengineering and AEM (Applied Economics Management - Cornell's Business Program). So I plan to apply CALS (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences) at Cornell.

For all the people who decide to go on this thread...please be free to add in your opinion/suggestions regarding my school record and my chances of getting into CORNELL!!! It would be very much appreciated! THANKS A BUNCH!

I agree about the SAT I scores (try to do lots of practice tests- those tend to help), though even if they aren't raised that much, I'm sure you'll be fine. I got in ED with a not-so-great SAT I score (by the way, I know exactly what you mean about the CR! I think it just really depends on the test), and absolutely horrendous SAT II scores (yours look great though!) Everything else looks good. Best of luck!

Milka, check you messages
