Cornell...dream college.

Hey, I'm a sophomore now currently with a 4.0. The only trouble I'm having is with AP US history..and I'm working hard to get an A cuz I got a B on my midterm. Anyway, I really, really wanna get into this college. So I'm asking if any of you have gotten in..and like what kinda scores I should be aiming for..etc. I'm trying to become valedictorian..since it's a small school..theres only like 100 some students in my grade. Also, do they like a lot of extracirruculars? Cuz my school is really small so there arent many extracirruculars. Right now I'll probably have

2 years environmental club
2 years beta club (cuz u can only join in spring of sophomore year)
academic program
honors program
im planning on doing some volunteer work
i'm debating whether to do another year of soccer..it's really really time consuming, and apush is just so hard that I need all the time I can get for it
But if i do the soccer, it'll be 4 years of soccer
if i get in shape, cross-country for 2 years
im taking arabic classes as like an after-school program
and i've taken a lot of summer programs with the johns hopkins program

And I'm gonna try and win some other positions to avoid the whole "clubbers" thing.
So yeah..that sorta sums it more or less. I'm not planning to go to Ithaca, though, I wanna go to Doha, Qatar cuz I'm already Arab, and my parents think it'll be better if I went there..and i'd like to go there anyway.

Sorry if this has been posted already..

Thanks for any responses. =)

Well, academicall you should aim for that 4.0 unweighted, a 2400 on your SAT I, and 800 on each of 3 SAT IIs. haha, but in all seriousness, cornell accepts all kinds of students, because they're big on the whole person, not an achievatron. Your profile seams really academically oriented, both in school and in your ECs. I know you're playing soccer, but you said you were ready to quit so its probably not a huge priority for you. Obviously you should strive to excell all around, but since you have an academically oriented profile, make sure to keep that really strong.

In terms of you being a mid-year sophomore and spazzing about college already, my advice is stop. You already know what the general standard for a top level institution is, be it Ivy or non-Ivy. The standard is just that- top level. Work hard in school, enjoy yourself, stop worrying about college. At least wait 'till mid junior year to start worrying. All that said, good luck to you!

I think Cornell really values extra-curriculars and community involvement. You should have to work hard for the A in your AP classes, but it is rewarding.I found that there is nothing more rewarding than working hard and participating in many activities. If you like soccer, do not quit just to keep that one grade at the top level. High school is not only about grades, it is about learning who you are and experiencing activities that you like as well. If possible I would suggest to pursue your interests as best as you can while keeping good grades.

If your school does not offer a lot of extra curriculars, a commendable thing that colleges like is to start your own club. Cornell likes individuals and seeing time invested in things you are interested in.

don't worry too much about AP USH. i got my first C in that class. started out a low C but moved up to a C+ (ya i know, not much improvement). i never once got a B- on a test, except for the final which somehow i pulled off a B+.

advice on ecs, just listen to your other replies

good luck

Thank you all for the tips!

Don't give up hope if you're not getting straight As in AP classes. I ended up getting a B for the year in AP US History but a 4 on the AP exam. My teacher gave us the hardest tests possible to prepare us for the exam, so don't lose confidence! The AP credit is what's really going to count when you save money in college.

Oh, and you're still a sophomore. Enjoy your remaining years with no college applications and try not to stress. Best of luck!! :)

umm screw that I had a 3.34/3.60 GPA. I had a very diverse EC profile though.

I know..my ECs aren't that great. I'll probably do more cuz I still have 2 more years. Most of the ECs are academic-oriented..but I read somewhere that ivy leagues liked variety or something..so I'm trying to do other stuff. But thank you again for the tips. :)

they like "variety" because a campus full of academic overachievers wouldnt be very interesting. They want kids who they know will go out and interact. Just make sure not to start a meditation club :p And why are you still posting. Didn't I tell you to leave this site and enjoy highschool? ;)

OK first of all who cares if you don't get an A...BFD. B's are fine...I mean of course B's weren't fine for ME, but plenty of people get in with a lot of B's. LOL

And SECONDLY...GO ENJOY LIFE!!! Seriously it is way way too soon to start stressing about college, not to mention pointless. It's pretty obvious that you're already working your ass off so that you can go to a good one, and of course that is all gravy baby...but you're gonna be pretty ****ed if you spent all of your hs years working so hard for something and it doesn't happen (I'm not saying it won't...but you really don't have much control over it beyond what you're already doing). Well I know I'm rambling, but I see so many peeps on this site who complain about how much they hate high school and how they can't wait for college blah blah blah and that's fine cus I'm sure college will rock, but make sure you enjoy high school while you can, because it really really is FUN and I know I sound like my parents saying this, but it goes by WAY TOO QUICKLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO yeah...go to a party or something and chill with the college stress!! :D

Yes, do not become college obsessed until the beginning of senior year, otherwise it will simply last too long. Think of a couple activities that really interest you and be sure to keep them in mind when choosing extracurriculars.

Fine..fine..I'll leave. For now. =p

come back in a year in moderation. You can rack up mad posts in a year and a half...
