Hey all,
Can you guys please share your opinions on this Masters of Engineering degree Cornell offers? I have been accepted to UCLA's EE MS program, Columbia's EE MS program and Cornell's ECE M.Eng program. I am still waiting on other schools, but so far I cannot decide between Cornell or UCLA. Columbia's engineering program is not as highly ranked am I right? Anyways, the question I have is, do people (or companies in general) consider M.Eng inferior to M.S degrees? If not, then Cornell might seem like a good choice since the program is only one year and the school itself has more reputation... Please feel free to give your 2 cents! Thanks a lot!

When did you hear back from Columbia? My application still says Pending...

It depends on your emphasis in EE, but Id pick UCLA or Columbia out of those schools.

MS is usually a research oriented program which many people use to step into a PhD or a research oriented industry job and MEng usually a terminal degree focused for broad industry centric knowledge. You would need to pick on what u want to do in the future. You can also finish ur MS faster, some people even do it in 1 year.

ghettonomics: I checked yesterday and under Application Decision it says "Accepted". I don't understand why they won't send us an email or anything.. Engineering applicants are required to check online themselves.. I don't know what the next step is though.. they haven't contacted me. Also, why would you pick UCLA or Columbia over Cornell?

floopydrive: Thanks for your input. Do you think M.Eng is on the same level as M.S.? I have heard people saying it is less prestigious than M.S.

What are ur future plans? If you plan to work right away without doing a PhD in the future take up Cornell MEng for sure, if ur not sure and u might do a PhD or a research oriented job then MS will help you. In any case I think u should choose between UCLA and Cornell.

What is ur financial situation? Do u have enough funds for 2 years? Which city would u prefer? A few things to think about...

I am most likely not going to do a PhD. I am just worried that when I am trying to find a job, they might think M.Eng is not as good as M.S...

Go for a MS from UCLA, if you work hard you could finish in a year. But his is just my personal opinion, make an informed decision, think a lot and talk to many people! Good luck, you have excellent choices to make whatever you choose.

hey stankuo802,

congrats on getting into the Cornell ECE MEng program. couple of questions for you, when did you hear from them? and when did you submit your application?

I applied about 2 weeks ago, but i havent heard a thing from them. congrats again.

floopydrive: thank you for your help. much appreciated.
misa1125: I submitted my application on 1/18, but I think they received all my supplemental information around early feb. I heard back from them today. Good luck with yours!

Whats the deadline for Cornell ECE MEng guys? Stankuo can u post ur statistics like GPA GRE etc?

the app deadline is 2/15
my stats:
overall gpa: 3.642
GRE: verbal 570 quant 800
majoring in EE

I figured since you didn't list a certain area you were interested in you were still not sure.

For example if you are interested in Wireless Communication, Southern California is the place to be, so go with UCLA. But if you don't really have a focus yet and are still figuring it out, all three are great for a Masters, so might as well choose which University based off which city you want to live in ;) In that case LA or NYC >> Ithaca.

ghettonomics: yea I am still not sure what to focus on.. but I thought I might as well finish grad school while I am still in school mode.. haha

Hi Stankuo802

Many congrats on getting accepted to these 3 top universities......
I just had a question.......did u apply to cornell as an international student or as an american citizen....the reason im asking is that i have also applied for the M.eng program under the ECE department as an international student and I havent received any reply from cornell as to whether ive been accepted or rejected.......since u already got ur acceptance, im guessing i wud have ben rejected.....otherwise i wud have been notified already....

I mailed them last week and they told me that no decisions regarding M.Eng were made yet and that I would be notified by mid-march or early april....but since u got ur acceptance already im beginning to think that ive been rejected...otherwise i think they wud have notified everyone whose been accepted at the same time...

I heard international decisions are made later in many univs so it might not be a reject winz.

winz: yeah, I applied as an american citizen. even if they rejected you, you will be informed via email. good luck!

i hav my fingers crosssd.........btw what opinions does every1 have of the M.Eng program at cornell.......my intention is to get a post graduate degree in the US and then to work.....i dont intend on getting a PHD.......i might opt for an MBA from a prestigious school 2-3 years after starting to work...
That was the whoel reason for me applying to the M.Eng program at cornell.......itz only a year....so the cost also comes down to a minimum.....

Does any1 hav anye opinions about the M.eng at the ECE dept at cornell......has any1 got any feedback from any students already enrolled at the program in cornell?

Sorry for asking so many questions at once......

yup I have the same questions about cornell's program too. any feedback will be greatly appreciated

I got into Cornell Meng as well for EE. (ECE). I also got into Penn State (with funding) for Masters of Science. I have to think about things, Meng i dont think will let me do research, although i dont know what i want to research exactly... i need to decide whether that is something i want to try.

If you are planning to get a PhD, then M.S. is an obvious choice. If not, then I am not sure.
