I also volunteer at a local organization, helping with bookkeeping and event planning.
My school does not offer computer science, so I am going to teach myself how to code or take an online class on my own time this summer in computer science.

Applying for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Undecided, I haven’t had a lot of exposure to the different types of engineering
State: North Carolina
School Type: Private, all-girls, boarding/day
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female

I didn’t realize until this year that I wanted to study engineering, as I hadn’t had much exposure prior. Is this a problem?

Also, does it help that I am a girl interested in engineering or from the North Carolina?

Do you have any suggestions to improve my chances of getting in?

Thank you so much!

Have you done anything closely related to engineering (camps, internships, work) to show that you are interested in engineering? There are students who have done lots of activities that show that interest.

@forester98 The acceptance rate for females in engineering at Cornell is around 28% while that of males is around 8% . There is a significant hook to being a female applying to engineering at Cornell. If your grades in AP Calculus BC and AP Physics (I’m assuming AP Physics C) are good, you should be well positioned. You should also explore research opportunities in the science and engineering fields, although that may be too late for the early decision cycle.
Otherwise, your application seems reasonable for Cornell Engineering as a female.

My question is, do you really want to be an engineer? What kind of engineer? If you are not sure, engineering is a tough four year haul because of the heavy course load required to graduate in four years. You’ve got to be pretty sure and gung-ho coming in.
